Default WRC 2002 Season recorded!?

Last year the BAIC WRC enthusiasts spread a wealth of media on barter. I would love to see this happen again this year, particularly in lieu of the farcical state this forum has come too. Lets relive/vive the love; I will initiate by offering to rip/vcd/burn all the copies, including cost of media ( within reason ) if someone can step up with their magic tivo:speed vision recordings of this past season. Help me make this happen!

I would love to have a 2002 vcd set of the WRC. I think Andrew on the club ripped it into vcd last time. I willing to be one of the burn center. I only have one burner, but I will try.

Thanks.

I made copies last time and Philip had them on the Tivo.

There were 15 discs. But that's when each was only an hour. Now each rally is THREE hours, making for what, 45 total discs per set

I thought Avatar-X was working on some.

I made tons of copies 30? 40? I know I went through at least 400 CDs, and I only asked for enough to cover the cost of the CDs and any extra donations were paypal'd to Philip for doing the video extraction.

If we did the same it would more than compensate for anyone who actually did the recodring and initial burning, but How many people have enough Tivo room for 45 hours of Speedvision (ahem...Speed Channel) recordings?

I'll help again if the recordings exist, but I'm not optimistic that they do.

That's not good news. A coworker of mine at EA suggested when I spoke with him last that he had been recording the season; I suppose I could check with him. On an aside, is three hours the broadcast time on speed channel or the true roll time of each rally's coverage? I can certainly do some smart compression and bring the size of a 2 hour video segment into bounds with the limitations of conventional CD media. I will gladly process if we can track down a data source. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, ok... you got me. Someone had to remember and bring that up.

Its true, I had set about recording all of the Rallyes for the season, all 63 hours of WRC + 7 hours of ProRallyes. The truth is, I had some issues with the DishPVR and getting everything recorded and trying to keep it on my hard drive (I even bought a brand new 80GB drive to try to store them on). As it stands though, it just wan't feasible for me to do, and I wasn't able to keep a large chunk of the later rallyes.

I'm actually still thinking of putting together a set, though, if people are really still interested. I was thinking of including just the Rally-XS and Rally-Xtras (the 30 min pre-rally/tech talk and the 1 hour abridged rally) as well as the ProRallyes. As it stands I was shooting for SVCDs, possibly with a DivX conversion later.

What do you people think?

I'm down to help burn as well. Let me know if I can help. Althoug it would be nice to have every second of coverage, it would be almost as good to have the recaps of the best stuff. I would also be down to help edit the footage if that's needed.

How much of the WRC season did you get? I may be able to compile the entire series through multiple sources.

I believe I have all 5 days of everything up through the Acropolis Rally, plus most of the XS and Xtras from everything else. As well as most of the ProRallies. Half of them are on my computer and half of them are on my DishPVR.

Thats almost half the season; I am willing to start burning VCD's and divx's of the content you have right now. I can deliver a disk array for you to dump the content to, I could bring a tape lib to put all the data on, I could hand transcribe all the content to stone tablets... Let me know if you are interested in getting the content you DO have, burnt to DVD/CD. As I said, I will provide the means to transfer the content to something I can bring back to my lab for processing.

That sounds reasonable. Are they HD stone tablets or regular ones?

Do you have a DVD burner available? If so, I might want to reconsider going the SVCD route and instead make some DVDs.

CD Burner, DVD Burner and stone tablets available. Note, the tablets are a relatively low density media, but I would be glad to work them for ya' if thats what you want!? By the way, how do you want to exchange the data?

I'm not sure yet how I want to transfer the data... I still have to compile it. It'll also need converting into proper DVD format - right now the data is stored in a Transport Stream (an abnormal MPEG-2 file) that I ripped off my PVRs drive.

Can you give me some more info on you DVD writer: is it an +R or -R, how much data/time can go on 1 DVD, and how much do the discs generally cost?

P.S. Anyone want to chime in on getting DVDs instead of SVCDs or DivX versions?

well VCD's are fine. But DVD's are better quality. I think you can store much more info/length on a DVD. As long as it will play on any DVD (not my computer only) I would love to have a set.

Maybe people can provide the media? Let us know how many it would take and we can provide (unless people can get media cheap through business accounts and then let me know how much.

Cheers

We can capture to DVD+RW or DVD+R. As far as media capacity in comparison to CD. about 6 time. Single layer DVD's hold just under 5 GB. I can set up a chapter system to allow us to brows by rally. How many races fit per DVD is dependent on the bit rate necessary to maintain the quality we expect. Do you have a drive you can transfer it to that I could simply pick up and return after I have dumped it to one om my stations or do you want me to bring you a drive, in that interest, that I could then return to pick up once you have managed to get the content on it?

I think the quality of the last set was just about right, it was about 1 hour minus commercials per CD, I think philip said about 1.9 MB/min "xVCD"

Better quality is always better but I think taking the amount of media needed into consideration is important too. Probably whatever is needed to fit 2 rallies per DVD would be best. Assuming they are three hours, that would be about the same as before 1.9 - 2 MB/min range.

tmpgenc does variable bit reduction, where frames that build scenes with less activity are bit reduced more than those in active scenes, within a defined threshold. This technology allows for much better size reduction to quality ratios than were possible last year. Likely we can reduce this data quite a bit more than last years set and maintain higher visual quality. I am told the three hours footage is inclusive of commercials, ~two hours without ads; At two megs per minute you should absorb less than 250MB per rally. Assuming we are running at a 30% higher bit rate using 300MB per rally we should be able to get all 14 rally's, mid season and post season wrap up on one DVD. With a good chapter menu and stereo sound. We'll see... First order of busyness is figuring a simple way for you to dump the content so that I can get to work on it.

What is the mpeg format it is currently in?
Where is a convenient place I can bring you media to transfer this content to? I am just south of San Francisco...

So I just threw in one of the CD's from last season, they are recorded at a pretty low 1900 bit rate and they still use 700MB. It seems to be quite a bit more than 2 megs per minute, more like 12. I think the A tracks may be around 2 though. At any rate, in lieu of this, it will likely require 7 DVDs to capture the entire season. No issue for me, I was quite happy with last years 14 CDs, though the expense will be higher.

I'd be interested in a copy of whatever ends up being made. I don't have a DVD burner, or I'd offer to help out.

Hey, Avatar, where were you on Sunday? We were looking for you at the rallycross.

SuicidalLabRat: VBR could work to some degree, but the majority of the footage will be fast action - so I wouldn't expect a large reduction in size. Cutting out the commercials will be the biggest reduction, as they average about 18mins per hour. The entire WRC coverage would be approx. 32 hours (42 if you include Rally-Xtras for the completists) + an additional (4.5+ hours for the ProRally series). So with anywhere between 37-47 hours of footage, I didn't expect to put everything on 1 DVD.

With that being said, if anyone has seen a good deal on DVD+Rs sold in bulk, sound off.

As for a place to meet, I'm not usually on that side of the bay. On the other hand, my brother works in Redwood City, so we might be able to work out something during the week. Or something else if need be.

hoche: Yeah, I know I couldn't make it ot the Rally-X. Unfortunetly our house was besieged by a battalion of flu virii, and I've been out of it for nearly a week. Too bad, since I finally got some new tires for the Gti - it would've probably helped.

Dear lord, I had no idea DVD-Rs were so expensive. What type do we need? 4.7 or 9.4 GB and how fast is the recorder we are going to be using? 2x, 4x, 64x?

Seriously, I would be more than willing to look around for deals. I just need to know what to look for. I'm thinking that we should probably go name brand (eg maxell, verbatim) rather than BeAll or WeSuckSoMuch. Let me know.

Also at the place I used to work at there was a 10 disc burner, so if any one reads this and has access to one of those things, don't be shy!!

We'll burn on HP 200e's. Media ranges from less than a dollar to 5 dollars each. I dont have any experience judging media quality in DVD's, so I am in no position to comment on which brand is best used.
...but, I am willing to mess with it a bit.

Avatar, I can drive out east to pick up the data any time over the next few days, let me know if there is somewhere/some time convenient for you, or if there is any way I can help otherwise...

Suicidal: The question is, do you want to meet once to give me some drives to dump to and again to pick them up? Or something else?

As for media, I have no clue as to the quality of DVD+R media, but I usually buy Memorex, TDK, or Imation CD-Rs, so they might work. I noticed a deal on Buy.com - $25.70 for a 10-pack of Memorex DVD+Rs. Something around that price should be reasonable for people.

Oh, and to answer your earlier question, the videos are stored as a Transport Stream MPEG-2 (an odd mux'ed format) with a res of 544x480 and a bitrate of around 1.2-1.5 GB/hr (I'm not sure whether they're VBR or CBR).
