Default wire harness for EJ22 and EJ25

im soon to be swapping in a 99 2.5RS motor into my 97L. im wondering if the wire harnesses are the same for thse motors, both are SOHC and use MAF sensors..im not sure if hte 2.5 has any more sensors on it. im just curious because if i can leave the harness in the car, that would save me some time. anyone know if this will work? thanks in advance.

According to outback2.5HO, the harnesses are the same. However, I later specified some differences in the MY00+ sensors so I can't say for them. But if you think about it, the MY99 should have all the same sensors and even the same sensor types. Although, I inquired about a MY96, not a MY97 and there were significant changes between the two years.

I just looked a little bit and it appears that the plugs are WAY different between the MY97 and the MY99. Go to www.northursalia.com | Technical Docs | Wiring Guides | then compare the MY97 and the MY99 plugs. Going even further, it appears that the MY99 MAF sensor requires a constant power while the MY97 either doesn't require it or sources it from somewhere else.

I've been trying to find stuff about this for quite awhile but nobody has been able to give any real insight. All I know is that you can run the EJ25 with all the EJ22 sensors and the EJ22 ecu, albeit not incredibly well. I've been meaning to get the full wiring diagrams for the MY96 and the MY00+, and the MY02 WRX to see what headaches I've got ahead of me, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Check out www.i-speedusa.com.

The guys at i-Speed have more experience than most anyone on engine swapping in Subarus. According to them, each year's harness has at least some change that makes it impossible for it to be a plug and play operation. They have some pictures on what you'd have to look forward to in swapping engines. Granted they primarily deal w/ WRX to GC8/Legacy swaps, but the process would be the same for any engine swap in the Subaru.

That would be exactly why I was trying to hunt down the actual wiring diagrams for the vehicles I was going to play with. As I stated before, it was said it was possible but I quickly noticed a number of discrepancies.

Subaru Lachute will also say that a wiring harness can be made, but it must be thorougly tested due to oddities and alterations.

The guys at i-Speed got all the wiring diagrams online. Some auto source website has them available for a membership fee or something like that. I don't remember the name of the site. Try emailing Chris at i-Speed. He might be able to point you to the website.

Kevin Thomas and WaC were able to run a 1997 2.2l with a 99 Legacy 2.5 ECU, FWIW. It just plugs in - wasn't perfect, but it worked.

since i will have the 2.5 ECU and harness, i will just go thru with swapping the harness. it shouldnt be THAT bad..

since im selling the EJ22 with ECU, i should include the harness..and if im using it, then whoever buys it will have to find a harness..so i will just stick to swapping them, i will have time.
