Lightbulb Subaru sponsored, subaru only autocross?

How does the sound of a Subaru sponsored, Subaru only, Subaru Autocross Competition sound?

Well that's an idea that has been brought forth to me to help coordinate.

The idea is to have it in North Texas.... Dallas/Ft Worth to be specific, at Texas Motor Speedway perhaps in late April of 2003.

Centrally located to the Southern USA, we can feasibly bring in members from both coasts and most of the middle of the country... this would be awesome.

The event itself would be spread out over 3 days... two days of autocrossing, 2 cookouts, one car show, many trophies, plenty of rivalry and camaraderie, and most importantly... FUN!

Jamie (and everyone),

the idea is, that SOA will support this similar to the Jacksonville event last month.

However, a local autocross club here would handle the T/S and other critical functions.

I'm very supportive of having a Subaru auto-x. What's SOA's plans for having these over the course of the year? There was one last month in FL. April may be in TX. Any other dates/locations planned for 2003? TX is quite a bit far away from MA.

I along with others who drive Scoobies plan their vacations around Tours/Pros sometimes... especially the 9 days for the Pro Finale/Championships in Topeka in September.

Speaking about Tours/Pros... here's what's going on in April... and the fact that they're all happening relatively locally would you want a MONTH of auto-x filled up every weekend?

Apr 5-6 Houston, TX Tour
Apr 12-13 Dallas, TX Pro
Apr 26-27 Topeka, KS Pro

That's quite a bit going on in April in your general area Bankheist.

Kevin -

The only problem I see is that a large number of Houston, Austin, or San Antonio participants may not want to drive all the way up to TMS, especially since it's on the far side of DFW from down here. I think you'd get more Subies from those 3 cities and Louisiana if you picked Houston or Austin. Houston's great b/c we can handle the numbers at any one of 3 locations, but Austin may be a better logistical location to optimize participation. Don't know much about their sites though. Honestly I think we have far more autox regulars in this area than you have in the DFW & OKC areas. In Houston alone we have 20+ Subies on average at SCCA events. No offense to TX Reg or Equipe Rapide, but the numbers there just aren't as big yet.

Anyway, I'm sad this is happening after I'm leaving. You know I'd be all over it!!! Maybe we'll get lucky and have enough Subies in the CenDiv to have one up in the Midwest (OH, MI, IN, IL).

Ouch! HouSCCA also will be putting on a Mustang only autocross sometime in there too. Looks like Houston's out.

kC - I say we get the ball rolling on a CenDiv or NEDiv Subie only affair! In the time it takes me to get to Dallas I can be back and forth to Peru 2x!

This is some good discussion! I think that, based on what I heard from the folks that ran the southeast event, the location should work fine. For the most part the participants in the SouthEast event where not National regulars. Although the end of April was an Idea that came from the fact that there was going to be some National activity nearby. This may turn into early May. I think it would be great if we could get a big draw from all over the country. I know that there where several people who came from North Carolina and Virginia to run the Southeast event. Thats a Hike!

NC had a strong turnout. Virginia's turnout was a little skewed, since Ralph happens to live in VA and helped put the whole thing together, while I attend school in Florida 5-6 hours south of Jacksonville. But the point remains... the event in Jax was a BLAST, and it would be well worth it to anyone to attend a similar event elsewhere.

Jack, are you afraid someone you have never heard of from North Carolina is going to come out and school you?

just kidding of course, but what is so boring about getting 125 or so Subies together from all over the country for an A/X?

That's the same question I asked about the Deal's Gap meet last year.

The autocross sounds great! Best of luck in organizing it... If I don't have a work conflict I may come all the way out there for it from South Carolina.

Well... it would be interesting, but I've been cursed from driving through Texas without any problems, and my car will be in a questionable state of preparation for most of next year unless I run into a lot of cash quick.

Keep us all posted, the event in Jacksonville was a huge success and fun for everyone who attended. SOA SE-Region sure did a great job in organizing and pulling the event off, similar to the event that was held in the NW a month or so ago with the Rally cars, old school crowd and everything. Hopefully SOA will be doing more of these around the country in 2003 so everyone has a chance to participate.

so SOA sponsors these, and are actually present at the events? Do they keep track of all the cars so they know who's warranty to void?

Gspot... SOA isn't voiding warranties. If they were, most of us would know 1st hand.

Where'd you get that idea from?

I would be especially worried that they will void the warranty on your '93 Probe. I wouldn't show up if I were you...

We just had a track day at Portland International Raceway, put on by Subaru. We were reassured by Subaru they were not noting VIN numbers, not voiding warranties etc.

I know for a fact that SOA was not noting anybody's VIN, or information at the Jacksonville event. They were all actually very interested in seeing what we do with our cars, finding out what are concerns we had, finding out what we would like to see in new models or parts availibility. Look at it this way, SOA sponsors an event and can get better information from the attendies than any corporate focus group could give them. It's a win win situation and it's a lot of fun.

I think it would be really good for all of the people who couldnt make it to Jacksonville because of distance to come here.

Feasibly, We can attract members from the SouthWest, Colorado, Midwast, all the way to North Carolina.

Texas really isnt that far for all those areas... especially for something on this sort of magnitude

Recently at a meet in Atlanta, we were treated to a walkthru of the SOA warehouse and a group discussion of the Jacksonville meet. The reception that they got from the Jacksonville event was surprising and from the conversations that were had SOA appears to be interested in sponsoring more of these events. Hopefully the powers that be will see this thread and contact you.

Sounds like a lot of fun. But why just limit it to autocross? Let's not forget how awesome the recent SOA event at PIR (Portland International Raceway) was. There were lots of different activities, a lot of people showed up, and everybody had a great time. Here is the link to the primary thread in NWIC:

October 27, 2002 "Taste of Subaru"

At any rate, keep us posted on whether SOA will really take some of the things they observed and liked at PIR and replicate it at TMS. Especially, as soon as you know which weekend this will center around, let us know, so we can reserve our calendars accordingly.

I attended the Jacksonville event and it was a blast. I will not be able to make it but encourage anyone that can to do so. The more Subaru drivers that let SOA know what they want from them(SOA), the quicker they will respond to our desires. SOA has been traditionally slow to change. I've had 8 Subies since '87, and now finally Subaru is beginning to address the performance needs of it's customers. Please let SOA know!
