I just called the number and asked for "Opt out". They explained to me that it basically means they won't ask us for permission to tell us their promotion from their (or other companies') promotion after "opt out". They just won't tell us what kind of deal is going on. One example is yahoo dsl. They told me that they DON'T sell/give our personal info. to anyone else including telemarketers. I still asked for "opt out" though.

Pac Bell is using some slippery verbage there to mislead us. Here are some quotes from the SF Chronicle article talking about the Pac Bell scheme, in which if you read the fine print, you'll understand that they're doing this cuz they make lots of money from it:

Quote:
And in return for doing nothing -- tacitly accepting the company's solicitation -- Pac Bell customers open themselves up to having personal information shared among all SBC subsidiaries and being badgered with sales pitches every time they contact a service agent.

Worse, SBC could share this information with virtually any other communications-related firm, including Internet companies, with which it has a modest equity relationship.

Fewer still have read the fine print. SBC says it would never, ever share customers' personal data, including numbers called, with third parties unless given upfront permission.

According to the FCC, though, SBC can share such information with any communications-industry affiliate in which it owns at least a 10 percent stake -- or, conversely, any communications company that owns 10 percent of SBC.

This includes other telecom firms as well as any company in the ambiguously defined information services field.

If SBC purchased a 10 percent stake in Yahoo, for example, it seems possible that Yahoo would have access to information about Pac Bell customers. The two companies already have a marketing tie-up.

If SBC created a joint venture with AOL Time Warner, that enterprise might also have access to Pac Bell customers' data.

And what of SBC's stakes in telecom companies abroad? The firm owns more than 10 percent of telcos in Canada, Europe, Israel, South Africa and Latin America.

hope that clears things up. to read the article in it's entirety, go http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...&type=business

There is no such thing as personal information anymore. Between coporations selling our info and the Homeland Security Act, privacy is a thing of the past.

I'd forgotten about your post when I got my notice, I went online when I got to work today to opt-out, but they need a special account number off my bill? Geeze, sounds like they're trying to make it hard for us to opt out . . . wankers. As soon as I get home I'm looking up that bill

if you don't mind calling them, all you need is your phone number and SSN.

use the . . . tele . . . phone? What is this ancient technology you speak of? Haha - I do all my bills and related junk online 'cause it's faster. I simply can't stand on-hold music with the little voice chiming in "you are number three thousand five hundred and seventy in que. Your call is very important to us, please hold the line and someone will be with you shortly"
