the real news is that Mitsubishi has setup a dedicated motorsport department in Europe that will liase (and control to a certain extent) the activities of Ralliart.

One thing they are doing is carying out a 4 month study of the Colt as a posible replacement for the lancer evolution in the WRC.

from autosport.com

Mitsubishi has announced a reorganisation of its motorsport business, after a disastrous season campaigning the Lancer WRC in 2002.

Ralliart Europe will continue to run the cars, but will do so under the supervision of Mitsubishi Motorsport, a new company formed by the Japanese manufacturer to oversee all its motorsport activities.

This season Mitsubishi scored only nine points and finished joint bottom of the WRC manufacturers standings, tied with Skoda. It was the team's first full season campaigning the WRC-spec Lancer, which has replaced its highly successful Group A machines.

Speaking of the team's current form, Mitsubishi senior vice-president Ulrich Walker said: "We are concerned. I am more than nervous about the current situation. For a couple of years we have been winning, and maybe one of the reasons [why Mitsubishi had a poor season] was they have had too much success in the past. If you have too much success you forget the competition."

"But we are committed to the WRC for three to five years," he added. "However, we have to win within three to five years and for me that means to be in the top three manufacturers."

The company also revealed that it was considering switching from running the Lancer to a Colt WRC. The head of Mitsubishi Motorsport, Sven Quandt, said: "We are investigating everything. The Colt is currently under a very detailed study, we are asking what will be all the consequences for this car, on the engineering side and on the marketing side. But we also know that in the WRC, the Lancer has a heritage, especially in Japan. We expect to make a decision within the next four months."

My Mom used to own a Dodge Colt. It's hard to see it as a WRC car.

I guess it's like that top gear review of the Focus RS: "The thing about the civic is, my mom drives one"

The colt/mirage H/B was an easy car to turbocharge... I cannot remember if it did have or could be easily swapped with a 4G63 turbo engine.

NOw if everyone goes to a hot hatch.... imagine a Subaru AWD Turbo hatch... YUM.

The older Colt turbo came with a 4G61. I believe it was a 1.6 liter variant of the DSM motor, so it's probably swappable with the full-on 4G63 without much difficulty.

Thats gonna be the kicker IMO. The colt will likely outperform the EVO because of its tighter package. They still have to meet the weight requirements so its not like its any lighter. But its sure easier to place additional mass than try to put a car on a diet.

I really can't see Ralliart dropping the EVO as the WRC entry, it just seems too bizzare.

The only thing I have a problem with is that all of the new WRC cars coming out do not have mass produced road going counterparts (Focus, 206, Xsara, Accent). They are basically becoming silhouette cars. I prefer the days of Group A which the Lancer and Imreza hark back to when the cars still had a road going version that used the same driveline and/or engine package. I dont know why, just keeps the sport more pure I guess.

I second Lou... Having Group A helped improve the "breed" of the production cars... Psssh, anyone ever drive one of those Focuses or 206s? Fun to do left and right but painful when accelerating...

been there, imagined that

...but Subaru already has its facelifted WRC car built. It had better be well along with preproduction of the hot hatch if it wants to base its WRC car on it. Subaru might just find itself being the last sports sedan in a hatchback series.

Now if the rules allowed the Pleo to compete with an Impreza/Legacy drivetrain...

Default Is it just me or????

Does that colt share the same body lines front bumper and side view mirrors as a honda Civic EG 92-95 and the side windows of an Ek 96-00 hatchback.. I love the way that Colt looks but it looks like they took two hondas and morphed them into the COLT..

If the Colt replaces the EVO, Subaru will have the only sedan. Skoda is switching to the Fabia from the sounds of it.... I'm starting to get worried.

I still don't see them dropping the EVO, but I would like to see them make homologation cars. How many did they have to sell for Group A?

Seeing how wimpy and thin the bumpy looks, I doubt it'll ever get past the 5mph crash test for US without modifications...

Tell me more of this Fabia. Is it a Skoda-fied version of a VW Polo or something?

I wonder if this is how the Legacy fans felt years ago when Subaru went with its smaller Impreza WRC car.

Default Rallye Race Altered, X for Experimental

I was thinking about that.
Mitsubishi took the Lancer name from Dodge. There were Lancers before there were Lancer EVOs. Dodge also used the Colt name as early as the '70s, but on a Mitsubishi built car. It would almost make sense that they all-of-the-sudden start making EVOlutions of the car. They might have to call it something else, because it's hard not to think of the Lancer when you hear EVO. The Colt WRC would be the second Mitsubishi car to be EVOlved. It could be called a 2nd Gen EVO 1.

Subaru likes to use "Version", "Type", and "Spec".
Toyota likes to use "Mark".
Honda is big on using the word "Type".
Generation or "Gen" is pretty universal.

I say they should use 'em all.

The more I look at that picture the funnier it looks to me. Like the intercooler is photochopped or something. Might just be my imagination.

That red one in the pic is just an old Mirage that's been out for ages. The new Colt is totally different.
