Default Dumb question, but I need help..

OK, so here is the situation. it may seem obvious, but for some odd reason I cannot figure it out.
My roomates '99 2.5RS needs a tune up. I have done plenty a tube up in my day, so I offered to help. But every car I have done them on is a bent or an inline, never a boxxer.

so I told him what to get, which wires to buy, what plugs to get (which no one has in stock), and go get a distibutor cap. So he goes to the local Subie dealer, and they tell him $175 for a cap, do to the coil being expensive. All I can imagine is the ignition coil, which you would not need , just a distibutor cap which is normall like $10.

so what am I missing here? someone help out? besides the wires and plugs, do I need something thatis differnt on a Subie or a boxxer engine from every other car I have worked on?

thanks
P-rex

A 99 subaru doesn't have a distributor cap. That being siad they were probably trying to sell him the coil pack.

Plugs, wires and maybe a fuel filter and you should be good to go. Fuel filter depending on miles of course.

Buster

Edit: Of course check the male ends on the coil pack for corrision, if found something like sandpaper should take it off then coat with some dielectric grease.

Any auto parts store should have any of the following plugs, I recomend NGKs, because thats what the subaru replacement plugs are. You can also get them at the dealer, I would stick to OEM parts.

NGK: BKR6E-11
Champion: RC10YC4, RC8YC4
NipponDenso: K20PR-U11

Subaru Factory wires are not known for their Longevity.

Might want to get some Magnecores. try contacting some vendors here, they can probaby supply you with anything you need.

how many miles does he have, cause that will also dictate what else should be done.

yeah, I was trying for NGK's or denso , and the three auto parts stores around here do not have them, and owudl not order them..

was going with magnecore wires already, but have had them backordered at two places already, so if anyone around here has them, let me know.

about 45K miles on the car..everything else looks good, except the b pipe, so we are replacing the whole cat back exhaust.... think the serpentine belts needs replacing too, or at least tightening..

thanks again

Dude, Subaru OEM wires are awesome. 45k miles isn;t that much at all. Subaru has one of the best ignition systems from the factory. Even MSD thinks so.
