Default Passanger side window EXPLODED for no reason??

BTW, this is on my POS Ford Escort wagon, thank god, not the WRX wagon.

Don't know if anyone has experienced this. I'm 99% sure no one shot BB's at the window or any rock kicked up and hit the window. No car on that side of the lane.

Going about 70mph, driver side window opened less than 1". No A/C on, only fresh air setting. All of a sudden a loud pop and the passenger side glass just shattered!

Anyone has any input as to why? Pressure differential?

Also, I don't have full coverage with Geico, just liability. There are also uninsured motorist insurance, comprehensive (whatever that is), would the insurance be picking up on the repair, you think?

Lastly, anyone can suggest a good place for replacing the glass?

Sonic Boom perhaps? Was an airplane overhead? Not that you would notice at 70mph though.

I had my rear passenger window smashed out in my wrx by a crook. The replacement estimates were as high as 360.00 bucks I found a place to do it for 220.00. Call around with as many escorts there are on the road the price for that vehicle should be less expensive than the subarus was. I bet you can find the window and have it installed for about 150.00 but im just guessing

Insurance,,,, well my progressive insurance has a 500.00 glass deductable. this is about par for the course unless you have the big dollar insurance. So it will probably just come out of your pocket.

Funny that you've mention "Sonic Boom". What exactly is it? You know, I just got done picking up my someone from SFO airport and I was going south on 101 right across the airport. Didn't notice any airplane above may be because I was going at 70mph like you've mentioned. Whatever "sonice boom" is, why not any other car but mine(?)

Actually, your insurance coverage should take care of this. You say you have "comprehensive" coverage and that should take care of the glass replacement with whatever deductible you have on your policy.

Your uninsured motorist coverage is for damage caused by someone else and it is confirmed that they have no insurance, then your policy would kick in and your insurance company would go after the person at fault.

You could always say that your car was parked and you discovered the damage when you came back to it later. It would be a non fault loss for you so no bad marks on your record.

Actually that's more or less what I was going to say. Just wondering if they will make me pay the deductible which is $500. Will see what they say. Thanks guys for all your help.

Still wondering what the reason is for the glass explosion.

If it helps any, (not sure how it would) one of my sliding glass doors suffered a sonic boom. It looked like someone shot the glass in the center (a small circular whole was dead center) and then it spiderwebbed out from there. Very odd.

That was the first thing in my mind. I quickly looked around, no cars, no tall buildings, no bullet holes anywhere and I was right across from the airport. Small chance that would be the case.

sonic booms are banned by the govt. fighters can only do them over open sea. against regulations to do it over populated areas, and i think the entire continental U.S. and commericial airliners are going too slow to create them anyways...

what a freak accident though...poltergeist!

Probably pressure differential. I had the rear window of my VW blow out once. Driver window cracked and BANG! No rear glass...

A good friend of mine had this happen to her Chevy Tahoe. Cruising on the freeway, then her passenger window explodes. Took into the dealership and they said oh well... here is the bill. She thought they were gonna cover it since it was still under warranty.

Let's see here, a Chevy, a Ford... hmmmm

here's a really informative linke about Sonic Boom. Only fighter planes and the Concord travel faster than the speed of sound, unlikely this was the cause for you

Just because it's banned, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The week of the big air show in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin, I was at my sisters place, and a few SR71's cruised by. It shook every house in the city, and was on the news. The air force issued a formal apology, and paid for numerous broken windows

Supersonic operations over land must be conducted above 30,000 feet or, when below 30,000 feet, in specially designated areas approved by Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, D.C., and the Federal Aviation Administration.

This is a video of an F-14 breaking the sound barrier. Pretty frickin cool!!
