Mitsubishi pulls out

December 2, 2002

Mitsubishi has pulled out of the World Rally Championship with immediate effect.

The decision has stunned the team's drivers, who were preparing to begin testing for the Monte Carlo Rally.

However, the Japanese concern has pledged to return in 2004. The withdrawal is to give time to concentrate on producing a more competitive car. After taking four consecutive world titles with Tommi Makinen, the switch to the latest Lancer and World Rally Car regulations has proved a severe disappointment, the team's best result since the WR Car's launch 14 months ago being a fifth place.

I wonder if that will affect enthusiasm for US EVO sales next year? It's really cool to see a car taht looks somewhat like your's in the rallies. You think the EVO customers will resent missing out on the 'basking in reflected glory' that we enjoy?

Do you guys have any news how this may affect the US Rally circuit? Over the last few months there has been so much press about the overseas teams & sponsors coming on board.

Wow! That was totally unexpected. Yes, they had a bad season, but to totally pull out just to concentrate on a new car? I smell economic concerns. Anybody else?

doesnt sound right to me...

seems the best way to build on a new car is to compete it, test it and improve on it....

something else must be up.

major bummer....

WOW

I'm sure it won't effect US rallying that much. They'll still be building Lancer EVO VII/VIII cars and Grp. N is where Mitsu is VERY strong anyway. The US effort shouldn't feel anything.

Economic concerns??? Huh...that's a possibility but it is very costly to develop two WRC cars at the same time.

I'd hate to see Mitsubishi gone from WRC forever.

Seems they will be using the Colt as their new WRC car.

geez, a colt? haha. i think an FTO wrc would be cool. then everyone in america would beg for mitsu to bring it here. whatever the new car may be, it's a 90% chance it's not going to be a car available in america, not by a long shot.

Colt? ouch. 1.3 or 1.5L cvt based 2/4wd that gets 22km/L
(~55mi/g US) just great. plus its fugly.

http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.jp/COLT/index.html

Good luck to them. Going to take a lot of work to get out
of the hole their in. Sad thing is Makkinen was warning them
for like 2 seasons that they needed to do something.
He kept getting more and more frustrated with the car
development.

Wow, they're just gonna "pull out"?

At least they said that they're going to return in 2004, or at least what they say.

Somebody off of another board showed this to me... the Colt SR 4X being developed by Ralliart Germany. This is probably close to what you'll see in the WRC soon.

I'd Rather Not Say.

Default And Adding to This.

That Hyundai is pulling their support out of their SCCA ProRally effort. Now wondering what John Buffum and Libra Racing going to do now.
Bad times in racing all around.

Interesting. Developing a car is usually done better by participating in the season. Just ask Citroen.

Maybe they are short on funds? Thank you very much, Marlboro.

I still think they are serious about rallying and will not leave for good.

And please, american EVO VIII buyers won't have a clue as to Mitsu's status in the WRC.

Mistubishi has said they will most likely contest certain rounds of next season, like Turkey since it is a new rally. They also said they would probably contest other rounds most likely, Sweden, Finland, Britain, and a tarmac rally? Mistu also said that they would pay for their spot on the transport boat even though they would not be using it. And that they would pay any other fees expected from them. Don't worry they'll be back in 2004.
