Thumbs up Buy stuff from the States

I just got back from a very short lunchtime trip to the States where I picked up some new suspension bits.

I used TSB Shipping over in Point Roberts to take delivery of tower bars and strut mounts from Primitive Enterprises.

Getting stuff from the States used to be a hassle because you either wait weeks for USPS or pay a lot for UPS to bring the stuff over the border.

This was easy. I called TSB last week and gave them my name and email address. Primitive shipped the box to my name at the TSB address. I got an email from TSB last night saying the stuff was in and picked it up at lunchtime. I work downtown and the complete trip was less than 1.5 hours.

When you come back over the border just say that you have private stuff and tell the guy how much the invoice price was. He gives you a ticket that you take into the customs desk and minutes later the GST & PST are paid and you are on your way.

Really nice people down at TSB. Helpful and pleasant customs post at the border. I'll use this method again.

TSB charged me just US$ 1.80 for the service and you can always leave it with them for a few days and pick it up at a weekend.

I reckon I saved $50 on brokerage charges and got my stuff a couple of weeks early.

Not bad.

Good to hear!

I remember last time I bought some clothes and declared it at the border, but they could care less about duty (because I was under the $100 limit), but what about gst/pst in that case - they didn't ask me to pay.

Either way, it sounds like a good plan, vs. USPS (which isn't bad either since, but it may be slow).

Saturday looks like the day.

If anyone wants to drop by, feel free. Ashton, you may want to check this out cos I get the feeling you will repeating the process sometime soon

I will be dropping the suspension fully out of the car and swaping the top mounts. I will need to go down to a local shop to use the air gun to lock the mounts on. Once they are ready, that's just a 10 minute job for all four.

Front and rear tower bars are also being fitted when the struts go back on.

Before anyone needs to ask, the top mounts are STI Group N and the tower bars are Cusco polished alloy (oval) style with STI pink frames. Well I say polished, but I think a little of the very special alloy polish will be applied before these are allowed near the car

Question

Ummm, markus, you were conversing with Petrie (who is Peter). I'm Penphoe (whose real name is Darren). Petrie's from the UK who is a computer programmer/consultant by trade. I'm a computer programmer/highschool teacher by trade. Our nicks start with the same letter, and we've got a similar background (but Petrie has WAAAAYYYY more coding experience than I do), but the similarities end there. He's originally from the UK, and I'm a Canadian through-and-through! Too much Alberta beef in your BARN diet causing you to get us mixed up? hehehe! J/K!

You guys can also do what I do when ordering from states..

1. Always ship USPS.

2. Always put SMALL dollar value on shipment.
(e.g. my last shipment. swaybar, tower bars, mbc. = $20 =)

3. Always declare items as a lesser value item. (e.g. Shortshifter = Candlesticks)

Doing these things will allow u to little or no 0 GST/PST and 0 Broker fees =)

of course im not responsible if your candlesticks get lost in the mail =)

Also, try www.borderfree.com

Orbbys method wont work, unless the shipper in the States co-operates with you. Usually not, if its a bigger vendor.

Try using DHL too, they friggin rock, stuff comes sooo fast from them. No brokerage fee, just GST and PST, 2-3 day delivery times, even clearing customs.

Im going to try Peters method next though, id love to go pick up my own stuff, not having to wait for the courier dude/dudette to come knockin.

Rear mounts and tower bars are on (thanks for the help Ashton). I agrevated an old injury in my back so we left the front mounts for now. When the ALK and lower arm bushings come in, I will do the front mounts. That way the front alignment will be ok for the next couple of weeks.

The tower bars look good (and that's probably all they do until the car is being punished). Guess what Ashton's going to be buying soon

The difference at the back from the top mounts is immediately noticable. When the car hits bumps on the highway it settles quickly instead of behaving like a washboard. If you are running stiffer suspension, I recommend the STI Group N top mounts. I wish there was a way to record the difference before and after, these are a big improvement.
