I won Tommi's steering wheel!

I got back from vacation yesterday to find a package from Prodrive on my doorstep. Opened it up to find that I'd won a prize from SWRT by providing a caption to a photo. The prize is the steering wheel from Tommi Makinen's 2002 Rally Argentina car, autographed by Tommi and Kai Lindstrom.

Yes, this is from the car that was horribly wrecked on Leg 3 - the wheel has "TM - ARG - CRASH - SCRAP" scribed into the back. From the pictures I've seen it may be the only part of that car that survived intact.

I know there was amateur footage of that accident on the web. Can anyone provide a link to it? I want to show my friends the wreckage from which my prize was taken.

If you are talking about the wreck where he hit the inside of a left turn and it sent him outside, flipping like 12 times and over some guys head then its in this compilation:

Nope, not planning on eBaying it - I figure I'll make a nice diorama for it, maybe try to get a signed glossy of Tommi, a 1:43 diecast of one of his cars, mount it all in a display box and hang it over my bar or in my basement with all my automobilia and other sports memorabilia.

Use some fishing line to suspend a WRC model "in the moment" (i.e. upsidedown flipping).

Check out the Feb. 03 issue of Sport Compact Car (I got it today), they have a whole article about their visit to Prodrive including pics of the wrecked WRC car gutted. Interestingly enough many of the parts were salvaged, but I don't see the steering wheel laying around in any of the pics.

Now, any chance you could tell us how you got to write this caption? Was it a contest, or what!? I'm waiting for them to send me a front bumper off the WRC car!!! But everytime I get home from a vacation it's not sitting on my doorstep.

I'll have to go buy that SCC off the newsstand. I guess the wheel wasn't lying around because they signed it and sent it to SWRT.

Yes, it was a contest. I subscribe to the SWRT newsletter online and it gets e-mailed to me prior to every rally. Periodically they run contests like this one, or one where you have to answer a question like "How many WRC events has Subaru won in its history?" or some such. Oddly, I didn't see the results of the contest on their site, http://www.swrt.com .

I've set up an Imagestation account to host pics of the thing but after trying to download I keep getting "invalid file format" messages. Their help files stink. Can you only download Sony file formats to it?

This may sound silly, but I'd figure out some way to adapt it to a Force Feedback Steering wheel for you PS2 or what have you.

Make a little seat and pedal/wheel mount and what a conversation peice that would be!

I can't wait to see some pics. What file extension are the pics?? .jpg? .gif? those are the only two that will likely work for imagestation.

You asked for them - hope this works. BTW I already have a Logitech FF wheel for my PC; I use it to play CMR and CMR2 (the only games I own). Besides I'd be afraid I'd wear the autographs off the hub.

Ed, Bring it to the back-roads drives. Then, even if you are riding shotgun you will have your own wheel to steer with.
