Man, big turnout at the rally-school and rallycross yesterday at Thunderhill. The course was wide open and a lot of fun.

Anyone have pictures of me? All mine turned out bad because there was some crud on my camera lens. I was the dark blue GC8 in run group 3 that started after lunch... I was the first one that wiped out on the nasty turn after they watered it. I hope that was at least entertaining to you all!

That is a wild ride! I wish I had been there to see that in person. I should have come to the RallyX. I totally screwed my runs at the AutoX, which was one of my reason for not going to the RallyX. Thanks for the pictures.

Wow. I hadn't seen that run from the Datsun. That's an interesting way of cutting a corner and avoiding the cones, I must say.

Hoche - here is my third run when you were riding passenger. Pay no attention to the cone I kill. It certainly doesn't look pretty... my start sucks but it was a 68 run.

Sounds like Pete missed a shift on his run. I'm glad I wasn't the only one doing it. Does he have a stage 1?

Wasn't the "fantom" cone along the back of the course? I swear it was after the first big left where I clipped that little left/right jog. After the run I remember looking at the back of the course in confusion that there was no cone called. But hey... if Lewis can hit a pointer cone while leaving the primary cone standing it's possible that I worked some magic. All the cones along the back of the course are still standing in the video.

I know I was penalized for the cone closer to the end (seen in the video) though.

I know what you mean! Before we started having rallycrosses up here I was driving down to Corona for the Tombstone events. Very, VERY different events. Tombstone's cool, but boy do you have to worry about your car a lot more down there...

Oh yeah, you're right. Ok, I'm still going to protest and have your car inspected for anti-cone technology.


I think I'm going to bring my camcorder for the next one. It'd be cool to have two cameras running and sync up the results and get a split-screen inside/outside view. Unfortunately, it looks like Speedmount has gone out of business (or something - their website's down), but I think I'm going to make a similar mount from some instructions I found on a Honda site. I wonder how much vibration will affect it.

Yeah... that would be very cool. In-car vs. track camera... but even a composite of two different runs with the track camera.

I think I'll search for a compositor plug-in for my video apps and give it a shot (say, with Pete's run and mine... since he kills me on the start but I caught up somewhere). I'll post it here when (if ) I get it done. It's a long weekend... I have time to burn.

Re: the mount. The last course was pretty reasonable so I think the in-car vibration wouldn't have been so bad. My in-car footage from the July rallyx was a bit bumpy but that course was pretty damn rough to begin with. Of course, the ideal mount location would be on a roll cage or other frame-mounted/secured device.

For the best dampening you may want to find some decent rubber material for the headrest - the SpeedMount (RIP apparently) uses 1/8" dense black rubber for the headrest post sleeve.

I don't know if you saw this back in July - but here is some in-car video. It's facing out the back and not too exciting, but I just wanted to see what it looked like. It gives you an idea on the vibration though. This was shot with a rider in the passenger seat (where the camera was mounted):

Hey Skylar - what you really got to do (~enter dream sequence~) is find a video app that allows you to OVERLAY two videos so you can do that cool side by side thing they show with olympic skiiers and sometimes Formula One.(~end dream sequence~)

Yes. However I remember reading on speedmount's site that they had better results with it off. I should do some "field tests" to do a side-by-side comparison on a rough road.

question - did either of you downshift to first? Perhaps it's the video, but Pete appears to have possibly downshifted, seems like there is a pause, a click or bang then off he went.

A fellow WRX owner loaned me his incar mount and it looked a lot like the one from the Honda site in the post above. His was home made, and went across the seats to both headrests. This meant that the passenger seat had to be in the same position as the dirver seat, though. I borrowed it for a track day at thunderhill and with a DV Sony camera with image stabilization on, it worked great. Granted, this was on tarmac.

I wish I had a better lap on video... my lines aren't too pretty on that run.

I shifted to second as soon as I picked up enough speed (just before I hit the first small left turn). I then had it floored in second the entire run up (braking via drift... although too late on some turns ) until I went way long into that last right turn. Once I realized I lost momentum I downshifted to first and hit it - then to second again through the intersection. I had my lights on and there are couple instances the camera catches the rears and they appear as brake lights.

I'm not exactly sure what Pete did... but you can hear his poor ol' transmission grinding at one point where he must have went for a downshift - and just listening to his revs near the end it sounds like he may have been in first coming into and through that last slippery right turn.

OK, I just got some BFG KDWS's installed so I can be more like my hero, Mo...

These tires rock (for M+S rated ones). Much stiffer sidewall than the ones I had been using. I hope they grip well in dirt.

BTW, even on the good runs, my lines aren't very flashy because I was practicing my left-foot-braking and was trying to keep the car only slightly loose, rather than in a full-out slide. In a couple of cases I was overdoing it and slowing myself down too much. I found it very tricky, primarily from a psychological view. I'd turn the car in and then drag the brakes, and it would start to turn in quicker so I'd drag 'em a little more to try to get it turning even faster. After a point, of course, it just slows you down.

Oh well. Live and learn. Need more seat time!
