Smile Subaru in Touring Car Championship???

I was listening to Speed last night for the year in review and at the end of the show Derek Daly was asked what to expect for next year and he mentionned an entry by Subaru??? Does anyone want to further fuel the rumor???

My father was at a race in Daytona earlier this year where the Irish Mike Impreza was running. He told me the car was head and shoulders faster than the rest of the field. And Daytona, with it's two mile straight, is not a track you would think the Impeza would excel at.

Seeing how well Gary Sheehan has done in the USTCC, (2nd for the season), on such a slim budget, I'm excited to see how the Subaru does in the Speed Touring Car Championship. I'm sure it will be impressive.

It's gonna be a 2.5RS, that's cool. I wonder what the weight penalty will be for the bigger motor (than the competition in the class) and the AWD?? I wonder what kind of power can be had out of the 2.5L. Supposedly the Protege's get around 220-230hp out of the 2.0L motor in the Mazda, the Integras get a (very) little less, the BMWs make quite a bit of horsepower as well.

Looks like I just answered my own question.
List of all Touring Car car possiblities.

Just glancing at the other competitors, it looks like the IS300 has to be destroked to 2.8L.

One would ask the question as to why they wouldn't improve the aerodynamics of the car instead of make them worse. WRX hood and scoop? No fog covers?

Well good luck to them... it'll be a damn interesting season next year.

One question: is that HP wheel or flywheel? I'm guessing wheel with that type of compression....

Well as far as the wrx hood, the first car was a wrx destined for the grand am series.... However you won'tsee foglight covers on the car..

There will also be an STi in the GT series. Unfortunately the return of R rubber will hurt the AWD cars bad, and the 4cyl STi even worse

If I remember, that Irish Mike is entering a 2.5rs in Touring car, and some sorta turbo in the GT class. I saw pics of both of them they are on this web site www.irishmikes.com. At least the 2.5 is.

Anyone who went to the Southeast Subaru Challenge in Jacksonville, Florida last October got a chance to meet and talk to Mike Flynn of Irish Mike's racing. IIRC both 2.5RS will be producing close to 240HP. I believe the hood's will be stock RS hoods (no scoop) with the bracing removed to reduce weight. Mike Flynn will be driving the first car and I don't recall who will be running the 2nd car. (I'm availible Mike if you need someone! ). They also plan to run an STi in the GT series pending it's release to the U.S. market.

Having seen Irish Mike race in the past I feel that he will be very competitive in the Speedvision series. To show Subaru that we all like and support this type of racing, we need to get out to the tracks and show our support! I doubt it will be long before we see a Subaru winning a race!

BTW the season opener is March 12th - 14th, 2003 @ Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, FL. It coincides with the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Its going to take a lot of development time, a lot of money, and a lot of driving skill to compete with the realtime cars, mazdas, and bimmers. I dont think we will see them top 10 for a while.

Exactly...the Turner Motorsports BMW's are fast and have lots of money. The Realtime guys, well...that's obvious too. The Mazdas looked extremely good for a first season effort this year. I saw them at Road Atlanta in person prior to the Petite Le Mans and they were GLUED into 3-4-5th place in a train.

My point is that the Mazdas are really just a first year effort themselves and managed to do very well. It's not impossible that the Imprezas can do the same. I'm looking very much forward to it. I totally LOVE touring cars.

The one problem I have with the Speed World Challenge is, that you either have to be factory backed or have a HUGE budget to be competitive. Mazda backs their teams, Turner and REAL Time have big budgets. There is constantly some privateer way in the back, cause they don't have the develop money to get faster. The only case of this not really being true, was Roger Foo, when he ran the civic. That car was fast, with a fast driver, so it did fairly well. I know this is only racing and the little guy will always have an uphill battle to overcome/face, its just a small complaint I have. The Subaru should do great off the starts, if anyone saw some of the races with the A4, he would get massive jumps off the line due to the AWD. I can't wait till next season to see what happens, maybe I will actually get SPEED so I don't have to always go to friends house's to watch.

I think with the right driver and development a GC8 would rule the series. Of course, I maybe a little biased.

Default What about Gary??

It would be nice if Gary and crew had the budget for SWC. In talking with him, it seemed he was making similar whp at factory boost levels in his WRX.

I cant wait to watch Gary whoop up on BMW (no more cheating Team BMW) in the USTCC and Irish Mike pound BMW and Acura in SWC.

Personally I love the fact that Subaru, who I have owned and admired since '83 has become a contender in now 3 world racing series. I remember my buddy's 4WD EA81 (i think, it was old) and how much we had cruising around in the snow and across open fields, the Subaru brand has always held a special place in my heart.

My '86 GL lasted for ten years for me (and 180k miles) and then another 80k miles for my brother and then another 50k for his cousin.

Currently im the happy owner of a '96 OBS with 184,000 miles on her and I paid only $1100 including the aftermarket intake (LOL). Next year we RallyX.

I need a tissue I feel tears welling up in my eyes.

The aluminum WRX hood might be better...might not. If it is allowed per the rules, then it might be partially blocked off with an oil cooler. An oil cooler might also find a home in the drivers side foglight opening, like the Greddy kit.

Do touring cars have to have wheel well liners? If the air is allowed to just flow right through, then it might help cool the brakes, right?
