Default valve lash?

I was wondering if some could explain what valve lash is. I remember reading about haveing to reset valve lash when doing something to the heads. Thanks in advance.

basically its the amount of freeplay in the valve tappets. What head work are you doing (cams, port/polish, head gasket)? Unless you're installing cams, or removing them for a port and polish you shouldn't really need to adjust the lash (that is unless its out of spec... your car doesn't sound like a diesel does it?).
