Default Front Liscense Plate

I was just wondering is it legal to keep your front liscense plate behind the passenger side window. i put mine up there today because it was makin the front of the car look horrible, and so i need some others knowledge so i can tell my dad its purely legal or not legal to do. thanks.
o ya and today i fully debadged my trunk. when i first bought the car i just took off S U B A R U, then about 3 weeks ago i took off the Impreza that is under the W R X, and this morning i took off the W R X, so my trunk was completly nakie until i put my new emblem on. lets just say i always wanted the porsche 944 turbo rose edition, and for now just the turbo emblem is enough, i will post pictures soon hopefully.

Do you have a front mount intercooler?
If not, you can do what I did.
Attach to front bumper/lip and bend plate to curve under bumper.
It is attached, but doesn't hang down looking stupid.

BTW, there is a little more to the law..
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5201.htm

Nice to know you don't have to have a reflectorized plate..
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc4850.htm

And that there can be alternatives to plates, though I don't see any description.
So maybe you can make your own as long as it takes the stickers they provide and isn't of "similar size".
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc4853.htm

I also notice that attached means "securely fastened...so as to prevent the plates from swinging" and they have to be "clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible".
I could not find anywhere that is says they must be facing away from the car.
So if your rear and front dash are 60" or less from the ground, you could put your plates in the windows with tape, facing you. You will get stopped and they might write you a ticket, however you should be able to win in court and in a year they will add a subsection to the vehicle code to say letters facing away from the vehicle or somesuch.

I also see it is a felony, with 12 months jail time minimum, to drive a car with a suspended plate on it, i.e. you haven't paid your registration for whatever the magic period is until suspension.

I believe in this case, and I'm no lawyer, that they mean they can issue other forms of registration in lieu of plates, such as temporary registration when you buy a new car. They stick the paperwork with the VIN showing thru a clear pouch they stick on the rear window (at least in my case they did). I've seen other stickers and devices used also. Such as some dealerships have a "dealer" plate they hang on the trunk latch when transfering new vehicles on public roads.

They always git ya one way or another!

well it depends really if the cop feels like being a A-hole because my friends like 4-5 of them have been rollin around with licences plates in there dash and have yet 2 get pulled over for it. Also police see them all the time we always hit up the runs in fairfield.

I've been driving my car for 3 months without my liscense plate on my front bumper at all and I haven't been pulled over or even talked to about it by any cops. My friend told me that cops over here don't really waste their time giving us tickets on that. I parked right next to a cop last week on Starbucks and he was looking at my car and asking questions about it, he didn't say anything at all about my plate not being there.
I'm getting a custom plate where the plates metalic silver with black bold words that says "WRX", "Subaru", or "Impreza" haven't decided on it. That's not illegal is it?

not illegal, but maybe a bad idea. I've driven my OB for 2 years with no front plate, but it doesn't look as modded as most RS's and WRX's.......

IMO, if you have no front plate, there's plausible deniabiltiy; "the holes stripped out, it got ripped off" etc.
If you've got somehting else there, you're flaunting it, and asking for it......

Basically, if you don't have a front license plate, you're just giving a cop a totally legit reason to pull you over whenever he wants.

You just have to decide whether you put yourself in a situation where you'd rather not be pulled over (ie after a couple beers, w/ "insert illegal drug here" in your car, etc.).

If not, then go ahead and put it in your windshield. I will warn you that it DOES look rice and ghetto on an otherwise clean looking car.

Thats why I don't have one at all in the front. That and my windshield is tinted so I am already asking for it. Hopefully they won't notice with all the others being so much darker.

Anyone else think it's weird that people would spend $20-$30 to buy a plate or frame that says what kind of car it is, when no more than 3-4 inches away, it says what kind of car it is....just seems redundant to me...

like when a chevy truck has the stock chevy emblem on the back, a "chevy" license plate frame, and a big chevy sticker on the back window...what's the point?

Well not the back of the car, the front bumper is where i'd put that license plate. I keep the back license plate the same. But I just want to put something in the front instead of keeping the two screws that hold up the plate just hanging there in front of my car doing nothing.

I've received more than 5 no front plate tickets on my Integra. You are not allowed to put it on your dash so that people can see it thru the windshield, you will be sighted for no front plate if you do that, so why make your car look ghetto. Might as well put it on. So far I've been lucky with my new car!

What would Scooby do?

Default

I have my front license plate in the trunk with two screws and a screw driver duct taped to it. It's only a matter of time until some cop has enough time to site me for it. Not sure that I would flaunt not having one by putting a fancy plate over the holes. Maybe try to fill the holes in with some type of temporary plug painted the color of your car.

Jim

What would scooby do?
