Default Some basic questions about getting HIDs

Come Spring I'll have cash for JDM LHD's, and possible enough left over to install them with HIDs. I have some questions I need answered to properly plan my purchases:

1. Is the Jim Hoyd wiring harness the only wiring adapter I'll need to install my new LHD JDMs? I have a 2002 WRX.

2. I want the intensity and hue of the new BMW M3 lights (bluish/purplish, and damn bright). From reading some other posts, this sounds like the "McCullough" HID kit. Is this the one to get?

3. What ongoing maintenance costs do I need to plan for? (e.g., how often do bulbs generally last, and how much are replacements?)

4. What should I do with my fog lamps once I've upgraded to HID?

I see the BMWs and Mercedes everynight driving home (oncoming and from behind) - they don't bother me at all. Only the SUV's hitting my side mirrors are a problem. So, I don't consider these things a nuisance to others as long as they are properly angled away from oncoming cars.

Thanks for the advice!

-Jeff

I donít have JDMís , instead I have morettes , but I would guess the principle is the same. I cannot answer the question about this particualr adapter you mentioned but only in a general sense. Currently your WRX has a duel filament bulbs. JDMís (like morretes) break into two separate bulbs, High and Low. The adapter routes the current wires for High and Low and of course has a connector for the JDM connectors. So this adapter is necessary for that reason and is the only one needed for Halogen bulbs.
The color of the HID's is mostly a function of the light design itself and not the manufactorer. (although i am sure there are some differences in quaility) To see information about the color go to the website http:\\www.HID4less.com and just read the information section . 4300K (Kelvin) gives a whiter light whereas 6000K is more purple.

When it comes time to covert to HID you pull out the Halogen Low Beam bulbs and insert the HID bulbs. Then you do some basic wiring. HIDís use less wattage while running (35 watts vers, 55 watts) but require more kick at start up. So the HID has a ballast and igniter to put somewhere in the engine bay. I havenít wired mine yet so I cant give more specifics. Do a search in this section for the username ďmulderĒ. He has given many people help with installing HIDís and there are several helpful suggestions.
What to do with fog lights.? I guess this question suggests that you believe that with HID fog lights are not necessary ? Since I havenít seen HID as of yet I am not entirely sure that they are a true substitute for fog lights. I am not a fan of bright white lights in the middle of blinding snow storm on a dark rural road. I intend to install yellow bulbs to offset the whiteness. Many people offer opinions on these matters but remember that these opinions are often a reflection of the driving condtions they live with.

If we're ordering an HID kit to work with the LHD projectors, will we want an H1 kit?

What bulb will we want for the new high beam?

I can answer 1 and 2...

1. I have the RHD JDM Projectors, but I'm guessing the LHD ones are the same and yes, the Jim Hoyd harness is the only thing you'll need in order to install those headlights.

2. I just had the McCulloch's installed 2 weeks ago in my car. I have the H1 bulbs. I can tell you right now that they are NOT like the BMW purple. They are no where near that color, so I dont know who gave you that impression. They are more of a bluish/white. They look like the Benz's/BMW's/Acura's with the bluish/white HID's instead of the purple HID's. And compared to the halogen's, the HID's are A LOT brighter and shine a lot more of the road than before.

Hope that helps.

I think BMW purple can only really be achieved with a 7000k kit, which you are ultimately sacrificing light output with... I just put a 6000k kit in the other day and it looks phenominal and the light output is excellent. FAR superior to stock halogens...

I must have misunderstood this person, when he said bluish, I just assumed he meant purplish too. I never considered the Benz bluish, just really white. I'll have to pay more attention to the cars that drive by.

But certainly, I'd prefer more light over having a trendy color.

The housing has a lot to do with the color that people see from the sides.

Don't get one of those crummy xxxxK kits. You won't be happy with the light output.

I think if you have the projector housings you will get the color you are looking for with the McCulloughs.

Most of the Mercedes and some acuras look more white because they have the classic reflector housings where as the projectors make it look entirely different.

I have Morrettes with the McCulloghs and the closest thing I could really compare it to is the newer Audi headlights.

I am extremely happy with it and I get tons of positive comments from people on the color.
