I have a intake horn going directly from the airbox to the inside of the fender with an 2.5 RS cover over the hole where the snorkel went and the resonator box removed. I am happy to say no water in the airbox....and I even hit some big puddles too.

I really hope nobody says yes to this because I'm ready to call people out for being idiots. The entire point of the silencer is to make the intake quieter and to prevent water from getting into the intake. Think about it. Any water that gets sucked in will settle at the bottom of the snorkus and drain out of the hole in the bottom, allowing the air to flow back up into the engine sans H2O.

If you thought taking a hacksaw to a brand spanking new $25000 car was a good idea, that's your decision. Just don't expect any sympathy when you get water in your intake.

Idiot. There is a hole in the airbox for drainage as well.

And you are calling me an idiot why? I realise that my post wasn't worded all too politely but is that really necessary?

EDIT: Okay I am an idiot. I did call people idiots in my post. I just think it's ridiculous to take a hacksaw to your brand new car to get 1 extra HP. I mean save up the $200 it costs to get an intake and do it right.

So, how, again, does it cost $200? It costs jack to remove the silencer. If going with an after market air intake, it doesn't warrant no water would get sucked in either.

Sorry S.R., you are missing the point of this thread. Would you have any related experience you want to share related to this topic? Or you only have your opinion to share?

It is my understanding that most aftermarket air intakes worth buying cost in the neighborhood of $200.

You are right, there are currently no intakes being sold which guarantee that no water will enter the intake path. It is implied. How in the world is any water going to get any where near a filter element in the same neighborhood as the stocker? Through the crack between the hood and the fender?

And no I haven't used a hacksaw on my car yet so no I don't have an answer for your question. I'm sorry for hijacking your thread but I just HAD to get this off my chest. Look on the bright side, it's on the top now when it would have been at the bottom. I'm actually doing you a favor.

Why did you ask the question in the first place? Have you done this mod to your car? Are you thinking about doing it?

Also, aftermarket intakes on WRX's havent been doing too well on the dyno's... its pointless to even get one unless your running like 400hp+

But I dont know what "hacking" you are talking about though, there are just a couple screws and thats it, no hacking invovled.

Oh, and yes, I "hacked" the frame of my L a little with my extra (note EXTRA) airbox I had which I modified to have a 3.25" hole. My frame also doesnt have as many or as large of holes as the newer models by the fenderwell to work with.

If you're talking about hacking the silencer bulb off and allowing more water into the intake, in my experience, it doesn't allow any more water than the stock silencer into my air cleaner. I'm going on two Seattle winters to prove it. I look at it as making my intake bulb "bigger"

Any water that makes it into the the snorkel now just exit into the fender liner area and drains out, much like it did with the bulb intact. I see no evidence of water getting up into the filter box from the fender well. YMMV.
