Talking New Stromung Install

Well, I just had my Stromung SS Dual-Tip catback installed at the local Midas shop, since I had no way of jacking the car up and couldn't fit under the car to do the job myself. I'm extremely happy with the sound, fit, and finish of the muffler-- not too loud, not too soft, and DEEP. It looks like it needs some Kartboy exhaust hangers to tighten up the fit, though, because it seems somewhat loose.

Anyway, there was a problem I encountered at this shop. They refused to install the midpipe *@%&*$%! I was furious. The mechanics told me it was illegal to install anything that eliminates a catalytic converter. They also said that I'd lose my license, etc. I think that's a load of crap, but I don't know where else to go to get the midpipe installed that won't refuse to do it!

Any advice?

tell them they suck because there is no cat in the mid pipe...

there are 2 in the piping between the headers and midpipe..., so go back and insist they do it, and at NO charge for dikin' you around...

I don't understand.

They told me that the exhaust eliminated a cat, and that doing so would be illegal.

IIRC, the Stromung midpipe does eliminate a cat. So, aren't they right?

oh, if it does (not sure about all the n/a exausts out there). I would suggest finding a diffrent shop to do it at. Also, you will have a bright CEL if you rid the cat iirc. But it is illegal to get rid of the cat. you could say it is a test pipe for track days. That might work

The stromung eliminates the 3rd cat...

Make a Thread in your local regional forum asking for help installing it. I'm sure someone would be willing to lend a hand.

Stromung Comes with a resonater. Maybe its just the '98s, but the stock mid pipe has a cat in it.

That is a resonator, not a cat, the 99+ do not have a cat in the mid pipe, the cat pipe has 2...

For some odd reason the 02RS have a third cat in the Mid pipe, do a search.

My MY99 does NOT have a cat in the midpipe, and my Stromung midpipe is not resontated.

Hmm, well, if the 02 RS has 3 cats, I'm not going to be remorseful about removing one of them

I'll post in my local forum to see if anyone can help me install it when I get home from vacation.

Thanks a lot for the info, guys!

I don't think that their is a 3rd cat in there. I remember looking at mine and seeing that and pointing out to a friend of mine. He told me that is a resonator and not a cat. but I don't know, he might have been wrong .

When I get home in about a week, I'll try to take another picture of it. It really does look like a 3rd Cat, and it is nearly identical to the cat that's located right before the midpipe. But, I guess Stromung wouldn't call their exhaust a "Catback" if it actually removed one of the factory cats.

My guess is that, although it looks like a cat, it's probably a resonator.

When I bought mine, from Stromung, they told me that Since I have a '98 I could get a 3rd cat eliminator pipe(mid-pipe). I got it, and its just like every other stromung mid-pipe I've seen. I wish I had my stock mid-pipe, I would of taken a picture of the cat.

??

Stromung sells a 3rd cat eliminator pipe for WRX's oONLY

there is nmo 3rd cat in any N/A subaru.

There is a resonator. The stromung midpipes have no resonators at all.

You guys are mixing up different comments and trying to make them work together.

Key points..

2 cats in N/A subaru's.

No resonator in a stromung midpipe.

Hi all,
I have 02 RS. The cat looking thingy in the midpipe is not a cat. I read it somewhere in this forum, I forgot who but a guy with a service manual from Subaru called it "expansion chamber." The chamber is empty, nothing in it . Have the guy remove it and look into it, is empty. That is how I convinced the muffler man to install custom 2.25 in midpipe. Also the chamber doesn't have heat shields on them like the other two cats. Another hint is the stupid O2 sensor is hook after the 2nd cat not the after the chamber. Take care.

P.S Here is the link. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hlight=chamber

I seriously doubt that Scott at stromung would tell you this unless when you said "Impreza" he was thinking WRX.

It's so simple it's down right briliant. No O2 sensor, no cat.

Yep, it was just a resonator.

I got the midpipe installed today. Initial impressions are a little more high-end pull, but I was a little disappointed with the lack of overall power gain. Oh well, it sounds nice

I guess a ProECM or cams would make a bigger improvement? hmm...
