Racetrack proponent looking for new site
By Associated Press, 12/26/2002 12:19

ALSTEAD, N.H. (AP) A man who hoped to build a racetrack in Alstead now is focusing on Massachusetts, where he says his plans have been more popular.

David del Genio of Acworth wanted to build a track for club-based auto racing on a 520-acre former gravel mine in Alstead, but many residents feared it would attract large crowds and produce too much noise.

Del Genio said he pitched a similar proposal to the planning board in Warren, Mass., and got a more favorable reception than he did in New Hampshire.

''By the looks of things, it's going to happen in Warren, unfortunately for Alstead,'' del Genio said this week.

After del Genio floated his plan in Alstead last winter, a group called Alstead Citizens Opposed to Racetrack Noise circulated petitions and leaflets urging citizens to vote against proposed zoning changes at town meeting that would have allowed the track to be built.

The drive worked. Voters trounced the proposed zoning changes in March.

Del Genio said the track would be a small operation. In addition to hosting races, he wanted the track to be an outdoor recreation park with bicycle and hiking trails in the summer and cross-country ski trails in the winter.

He also said the operation would provide tax money and tourist dollars to the area and serve as the basis for Alstead's economy.

Before the vote, del Genio said he'd be back in 2003 if the plan didn't pass. But on Monday, he said he was discouraged by the cold reception the plan received in Alstead and was encouraged by the positive response in Warren, a town of about 4,400 residents halfway between Worcester and Springfield, Mass.

Del Genio said the plan already had met the town's environmental requirements, an important step.

Meanwhile, Alstead officials are exploring whether the town should buy the proposed racetrack site for conservation. The Alstead Area Citizens Trust is negotiating with the land owner and has raised more than $100,000 to buy it.

Anyone in here live in Warren Massachusetts ?
If so do what you can to encourage the town fathers to work with this guy.

Does anyone know what sort of a race track he wants to build ?
a 1/2 mile oval ? a drag strip ? or just maybe a nice little road course ?

I'm thinking it's a road course for the SCCA. I *THINK* he's on the new track committee. It would be for club racing types... not the Nascar/Busch types.

that would be pretty cool.

too bad it's about as far away from me as NHIS is...so it's not really local for me. Meh, whatever, though...

Another road course in the general area would be pretty sweet. NHIS is kind of boring, IMHO.
