Question 5th gear popping out at cruising speeds..

For the last 2-3 weeks the 5th gear pops out every now and then. Totally weird. Trannyoil looks good, not too full or too low.
And the reverse is a b***** to get in.
Any ideas?

Had the same problem 4 months after I bought my MY00 RS. It began occasionally popping out when I'd get off the gas pedal then got progressively worse. Eventually I'd have to hold the stick in 5th gear. Then, at one point, I couldn't even get it in 5th anymore.. Put stick in 5th (felt weird), let out clutch slowly.... *GRIND* No more 5th.

Brought it to the dealer. They took the tranny apart and found that the main bolt that holds everything together became loose. The whole tranny shifted and began to rub against the tranny casing.

Damage? 5th gear synchro and back of tranny casing replaced under warranty. Ever since then, everything is A-ok with my RS

Get it looked at ASAP, you might end up losing more gears than just 5th.

ciao!

Sure seems like there are alot of tranny problems going around. Even with the non-turbo guys.

On a side note I've seen some M/T cars that used ATF instead of regular tranny fluid. A friend put the regular in his M/T and it damn sure didn't react well to it. It would also pop out of gear. This however isn't the case with the Subaru since it isn't one of those mixed up trannies.

Trannies are the weak link in the Subaru, as much as I hate to say it. I had the same problem with my 00'RS. I took it back to the dealer, they paid for a rental car while they fixed my scooby. Then a couple months later, I had a synchro problem. Down shifting into first gear kept getting harder and harder, eventually you had to completely stop the car to get it into first. Right before I took it into the dealer it started grinding shifting into fifth. Once again the dealer paid for the rental car while they fixed my scooby under warranty. That's what you call service. Any of you have a short shifter installed when you took the car to the dealer and did they give you any problems? I am going to get my car looked at soon because the clutch shudders really bad when it is cold. Just wondering if you got any lip from the dealer for having a different shifter. thanks

It's a fairly common issue with MY00's, take it back to the dealer & they should know what to do with it.

What was the diagnosis on this from your dealer, and what was the repair bill?

My '98 just started doing this last night. I think the 5th gear syncro is gone. I can rev match or double clutch to get it into gear cleanly, other than that, reverse seems suddenly a little sticky.

Since the car is a '98 I have driven it beyond the factory warranty, so I am interested in the potential cost to repair. Thanks guys!

Just FYI, If you rest your hand on your shift knob, you shouldnt, this wears out the shift forks in the trannie (they basically hold the car in gear), when they wear out, they will no longer be able to do their job as effectivly and the car will "pop" out of gear.

Boggle? I just want to know how much cashola it is going to cost me to get the tranny working normally again. So far it looks like maybe 9 hours of labor, parts are kind of unknown.

Thanks for the wiseass remarks, very helpful..

rubasu====> you will get major lip if the dealer discovers the short shifter.....especially re: a poss tranny ($$$) replace/repair.
take it out b4 you go no matter what.
dealers look for mods(excuses) to not pay warrenty issues especially re: expensive trannies.

FYI: There is a TSB out on a main nut inside the tranny that came from the factory with incorrect torque specifications. Over time it loosens up and causes 5th gear and sometimes reverse to function improperly. My car was actually grinding when going into 5th. If you just take it down to the dealer and prove to them that its happening, they will take care of it. My car had some bearings, 5th gear, and 5th gear synchro replaced under warranty.

Unfortunately, the repair takes about two days. Luckily its a warranty repair so a rental car should be supplied to you.

Hey now... this issue has just started occurring in my RS. She's going in on Tuesday.

I'll keep y'all updated.

If anyone knows what the TSB for this issue is, please gimmie some info. I want to get this done right. My dealership said they were going to just tighten the nut. I'd like it fixed.

I am having the same issues. I have ea thread started in the tranny forums right now about it. I called to get service on it at the local dealership and they said the soonest is the 17th of September looking for other dealers now in my area that can take care of it sooner

Yeah, I have to wait until next Tuesday. The 4th of September.

I'm trying to get some more information on the issue though. I've read that a lot of people have had to have their trannies rebuild because of this pesky little nut. So I want to make sure that they really check my tranny out, instead of just tightening the nut. Ya know. I'm trying to get myself a copy of the TSB. That way I can bring it in with me when I go to drop off my car.

Okay... I'll ttyl.
