Default Roof vent rule change?

Had anyone noticed the absence of roof vents on some of the cars of late? has there been an FIA mandate for their deletion?

Hey Christian,

I don't think it was a rule change. It seems some teams are trying to pull in air from other places.......maybe to reduce the drag of the scoop?

I am just guessing though.

In the WRC, they appear to now be using them only on events where they really need them.

they did not ban them in SCCA Pro Rally....

roof vents as of 2002 are not permitted in Production or PGT cars as it "takes away from the production look" of the car...

STUPIDEST MOST ASININE thing i've ever heard....
and it nearly put me in the hospital....

so there ya go that's my take on the dumbest rule in Pro Rally!

Hospital???? Glad you are OK. What was it? Dehydration? Heat stroke/heat exhaustion?

Agreed, dumb rule.

Yeah, maybee the ones that did that rule should run a rally in a car without vent and then decide!!!

What a dumb a$$ move!

WRC I belive is starting to take their vent from arround the grill, or so they said in the Year In Review in Speed Chanel.

exactly... Rim of the World rally 2002...
lost my power steering and had to do 1.5 stages
in mid-day heat battling the welded front diff

doc said it was heat stroke and mass dehydration...
i cant explain how bad off i was but it wasnt good

10 gallons of water later... i was back on stage...

stupid friggin rule... i cant fathom why it exists?
let's put some of those SCCA officianados in some
P cars at Rim this year... see how they feel!

Wow! That's a lot of water for such a little Subie Gal! Sounds like it was pretty serious.

So, what option do you have? Can you run some sort of vent from the front of the car? How about one of those bolt on "snorkus" things that the Sport Compact Car guys used on their Type RA loaner during the One Lap a year or two ago?

I think the roll cage takes away from the production look also. Maybe they should get rid of that too.

Yikes..

If no vent is allowed on the roof, they should allow you to draw air in from somewhere else and duct the air towards you seat or something.

should have left the A/C in the car huh?

seriously though, you might want to consider a cool suit. those things are pretty sweet. the road racer i crew for uses one at the hot races. for example, the august race this year was quite the scortcher. 135* track temp, the skin on my arm was a sweltering 103*. Steve was quite comfy inside the RX-7 (be thankful you don't have a rotary, now that's some heat, especially without an interior). he felt it was well worth the extra 20 or so lbs. just a thought.

what's up Christian!

I was there to witness Jamie's heatstroke incident.

She was a mess!

But she still finished the Rally

The SCCA rule on P/PGT cars and roof vents is rediculous. It's a safety issue and should be protested on that basis.

Jamie was at serious risk during that event, they should be looking at ways to make the sport safer, not make it more dangerous for the competitors.

Hell, i even have a roof vent in my road car.

The works WRC cars have run a seperate cooling system since mid last year and dont need the roof vent anymore. It's well proven that if you can keep the crew cool and well ventilated they perform at a higher level for longer periods of time.

One of my happiest moments with our car after moving to Open class was cutting a hole in the roof for my vent! :-) It's the most ill-informed decision the SCCA has made and there will be more health issues for crews because of it.

Cheers! John
