Default New STi...No Radio?

The new STi will have no radio, no speakers, and no floor mats. It will come pre-wired for the radio, which is a dealer install, not port installed.

The STi is due at dealers in March or April

Really? That's odd. Is it because the STi in Japan comes with that really cool McIntosh stereo? Dealer installed option, huh? What are you guys planning to do, Lisa? Use OEM WRX headunits?

Who cares about the radio as long as we get the good brakes and wheels! Seats, too.

I guess we will have to use the OEM WRX one, but I would rather have a nice $3000 unit installed.

I thought it was the STi Type RA and/or Spec C that did not come with a radio?

STi will have stereo, it is against the law to any car manufacturer not to install a stereo for U.S.D.M cars. This is to keep people awake while driving. Plus, only Type RA spec C doesn’t come with stereo, and we are not getting it.

Mazda is selling a street-legal Miata that is "stripped down" and includes no radio.

I've personally purchased 3 new cars in the last 15 years that had the "radio delete" option - guess those manufacturers were all breaking the law.

Lisa doesn't post stuff unless she is near 100% sure, so I'd take this as being legit.

Besides, at our last Atlanta meet we had regional SOA representation that stated the launch date as well as several "details" of the new STi.

This is probably Lisa's source (or so I would guess).

Would this supposed law be a federal law or a a state law? Since many traffic laws are enforced at the state level or lower, are they any federal laws governing automobile equipment on the road?
Also, I seem to recall my father owning a Toyota truck that did not come with a stereo in the late 80's. I personally think the STi should come stock with at least the WRX head unit..

If this is true, this is great news!!!

Ripping a 1K factory setup out was gonna be my first mod! I've already got a high-dollar hifi unit to drop in it's place. If this in any drops the ticket prices, we are in luck!!!!!!!!!!

I really think Subaru is going to surprise with a great car!

ha, that's a good one. I am willing to bet $100 that the car will come with a radio.

Wouldn't that be way cool if a manufacturer in this day and age of high tech gizmos offered a car without a stereo? Now if we could just get an STI without electric windows, cruise control, sounddeading material, etc. we might actually get a real drivers car that weighed under 3000 pounds. Last manufacturere I recall that offered such a no-frills sportscar was the Porsche RS America, which has now become a collector's item among Porschephiles. I'd be a lot less concerned about power/torque figures if we actually had the chance to buy a lighter weight STI. The improvement in handling gained from less weight can't really be made up by more power. It's an unbelievable thrill to drive a powerful light weight sportscar. It would really impress me if Subaru offered a stripped down STI that you could option if you wanted all the typical electronic conveniences that modern cars have. Doubt it is going to happen but fun to contemplate.

If it does, it was installed in route...not at the factory...

you guys might want to find out a little about the "sources" that post on this board before you discredit them...

The regulation would have had to happen in the 90s. One of my friends had a 92 or so festiva L sans radio. I also seem to recall that the 90 metro LSI did not have a radio but the antenna was wired in.

Before my IT career, I did the car stereo/security install thing from about '93 to '98. I saw numerous cars come to my shop with nuttin' but a blank ABS panel in the dash. The last ones to come to mind were the '98 Chevy Cavaliers.
This is NOT a law, at least in Colorado.
I probably saw 5-10 different makes and models in '98 (GMs, and Hondas especially) without radios. Some were prewired, some weren't. Some had antennas, some didn't. I don't ever remember seeing a Subaru without a radio, in fact I don't remember seeing many Subarus. If I did, they were mostly 40-sumthings with Legacys.
