I use Mobil 1synthetic.
I am not sure of what oil filter is "more efficient."

Default I have spent tons of time looking at this...

After spending a bunch of time, here are my conclusions:

Filters:
-The Subaru OEM filter is made by Purolator (in the US) and is pretty darn good. If the OEM Subaru filters in NZ come from Japan...they are very good!
-Other good and reasonably priced filters are Purolator, WIX and NAPA Gold.
-High end filters that are quite good are Mobil1 and Amsoil.

Personally, I am using the OEM Subaru filter. Reference: http://www.dorianyeager.com/oilfilterstudy1.html
http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

Oil:
-I assume: 1) you want something better than dino oil and 2) you want something that performs well in hot and cols weather.
-Reference: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
-Mobil1 can be purchased about anywhere and is very good for the price.
-High end are: Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Motul. All have their fans. Really can't say anything bad about any of them, it boils down to preference. A lot of folks go all the way with one brand. For example, use the same brand's gear oil, differential oil, and motor oil.

Personally, I use Royal Purple in the WRX and Mobil1 in my three other cars. I have used Mobil1 for years and highly recommend it. The WRX is driven harder than the other cars, plus I use Royal Purple MaxGear in the tranny and rear end.

Hope this helps. If I were you (i.e., care about your car, but not a flange head...plus you live beyond OZ), I would use the OEM filter and Mobil 1.

gees, thanks everyone, that was a really interesting read.
i think i will either use motul or mobil 1.
the mobil 1 is $100.00 for 5 litres over here, and going off some of the data i will probably use the mobil 1 filter if i can get it.
again thanks for the help
