Default Japan Market sport tires we don't get here

Hey guys since there seems to be some interest about all these tires from Bridgestone, Yokohama, etc. that we don't get here. I thought I'd compile a list of links to sites that show what we're missing out on. I don't know if it's possible for Tire Rack to get any of these tires or not.

The main reason I have been searching through these tires is to try to find a tire in a 245/40-17 that is a little more streetable than a Hoosier but is still resonably compeitive in upper classes at auto-x.

Dunlop:
http://tyre.dunlop.co.jp/tyre/lineup/sport/index.html

Bridgestone:
RE55S - http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/ms_tyre2/gym-55s.html
RE540S/520S - http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/ms_tyre/...gym/2_gym.html

Yokohama (Advan):
A048 - http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/japan...advan_a048.jsp

Falken:
http://www.falken.co.jp/catalog/race/onroad/spec.html

I think that's it... feel free to add others if you find some. I think the RE55S is brand new and possibly not available yet.

One thing I find interesting is the total width difference on the 235 and 245 RE540S in the same aspect ratio of 40. Only 4mm, and that is mounted on different sized rims. If one were to mount a 235 on an 8.5 inch rim there would probably be even less than that. On the other hand the difference in 235 and 225 is 12mm granted there's an aspect ratio change. The implications of this I think for the people running in STX is that only going with a 235 on the maximum 8" rim might not be the end of the world as you probably won't gain anywhere near the 10mm of tire on the road that the size would suggest, also putting a 245 tire on an 8 inch rim seems to leave a less than optimal shoulder shape. Anyway, just thinking out loud.

I think one problem is DOT certification. Many of those tires are probably not DOT tires, and Tirerack will be taking a risk by selling these tires here. Even if they are stated for non-public road use, they may still be liable if you kill someone on your way from the track to the gas station around the block.

Luke can probably give you a better answer, but that'd be my concern.

I posted something like this in a previous thread. I have seen the 540S at work and they have DOT markings on them with the number stamped into the side just like my S-02's do. Also they're light as hell and very stiff. I could probably sit one upright and stand on it without it collapsing.

Thumbs up ellisnc

Those are some awesome finds; I had no idea that there are potenza rally tires?! Everytime I see more cool motorsports crap that Japan has, it makes me want to go there just for shopping. Though I think that the best way to get our hands on stuff like that is through motorsports shops in the U.S. that normally get stuff from Japan. Since they already have the appropriate channels, getting extra items that they don't normally get should only be a small effort. Although they would know best.
There is a rally shop in PA that sells Falken gravel rally tires, so maybe they can get tarmac ones too. www.ilpperformance.com Good luck.

No, I don't think so. They sell non DOT tires on TireRack already.
FWI, the Hoosier Wet radial racing rain tire is a non DOT tires and is sold on TireRack.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....del=Radial+Wet

It probably comes down to the tire company and if they what to spend the money to bring them here and get them DOT appoved. I have seen some of these tires and they come with large tread grooves. The Hoosier Radial A3S03 (auto-x) tire is a DOT tire and practically have no tread grooves. I down see why they could be DOT approved. It's all about money and would it be worth it for the tire company.
