Default Does anyone else LOVE the sound of the boxer?

I think the sound of the boxer engine is so SWEET! I've got a WRX, but I'm guessing that even the RS engine still has that muscular sound (minus the turbo whine, of course). It sounds WAY better than any 4 cylinder I've had (Honda, Nissan, etc.) and I think it even sounds better than the straight 6 in the M3.

I LOVE the growl of the engine. I'd like to remove the silencer and upgrade the exhaust in the future, but I don't want to not hear that great engine sound.

Get the STi engine and tranny mounts. The Growl gets even better. There is negligable change in NVH. Well worth the money.

Talking

Every time I pull into my parking garage I leave the window down and turn off the radio. Sweet, so sweet...

And yes, the 2.2 and 2.5 flat fours sound lovely too...

Have a Nice Day? Sorry to say...

First of all: I absolutly love the sound of the Boxer engine... BUT!

Before I became a sube owner I was a rice devouring Honda owner. ( I know, I know... I never had Altezas) The part I am sorry to tell you guys and gals is that there is still no comparison to the sound my old JDM B16A gen. 2 engine made when the VTEC kicked in... It was a heavenly sound!

Keep in mind I don't have a turbo to listen to spooling up, or a BOV to hear chirping under my hood, but I still think that my Honda sounded better with CAI and Greddy exhaust.

SORRY... Just My opinion

Default It sounds good, but...

I think some of you seriously need to listen to a V8!

No way would I put a fart pipe on my little Subie - it sounds just fine like it is.

Exclamation Notin' beats a V8

I gotta go with WRC-Go on this one. Granted the boxer sounds great, but a free-breathing V8 (350 cubes and up, of course ) sounds soooo much better.

I have a Prodrive muffler and even my staunch anti-import WTLW muscle car guy friends like the sound of it. It's a beautiful thing indeed.

I've heard them.

Ever been to RoadAtlanta or other ALMS series event and heard the C5R's?

I do agree that a well tune 350 sounds sweet. I was the owner of a '69 Camaro for 8 years. I loved that thing to death! It was a 350 punched .30 over with a 305 duration and a + 500 lift cam cupped up to flomaster 40 series on the other end. When you dumped the 4 barrels it was an amazing sound! I do miss it alot but I don't miss riding down the highway at 65mph @ 3600 rpm and couldn't hear what your friend sitting next to you was saying.

On the other hand a Flat-4 with a good exhaust is far from sounding like a fart can civic ect... It's a very aggresive sound. Just at half the volume. I've come to love my scubie to death as well as the exhaust sounds. And the turbo and BOV of course.

Just my 3 cents...

I have owned V8's.

390 Torino
350 Cutlass
302 Montego

The Cutlass had a cherry bomb exhaust...."huh, what did you say?"

The Montego got me a lot of speeding tickets in a short time, and a forced appearance before the Judge.

The Torino was a "Chevy Chase Vacation" type heavy station wagon and needed all the displacement and all four-barrels when packed to the gills with all seats filled and a full roof rack. It must have been created by a committee figuring how much stuff they could add to make it heavier. Like, OK we got this 2.5 by 3/4 fake wood trim on the sides and back, how come we don't have any on the front of the hoodl?

I have to admit I would rather put on a jacket and have a window down also. The boxer is a sweet soundin machine but...

/flamesuit on/

IMO there is nothing that sounds better then a light tuned b16a switching cams (were just talking sound) im with ya Sampson.
That motor just sounds like it has no problems breathing, begging for a 50 shot to get her spinning faster. very clean sound.
When one pulls up beside a honduh and you rev a boxer, it will always get the first look so to speek. Ricer glance followed by an insane wheel hop "burnout/takeoff"
Just sayin, least the name aint PentUpSir.

/flamesuit off/

My shop foreman has a nova with a 327 runs on "champane" 11:1 comp, now that car sounds deadly.
Still like the "Boxer Burble" though

Cool not scary...

Ok, yes the boxer sounds great..

If you owned a V8 car, then you KNOW what a V8 is all about.

You can drive at 40 in 4th gear, slow down to 15 due to traffic, and speed right back up, no problem and no down shifting!

The roar, you see, a 4 or 6 inline, V, boxer etc, will only get higher pitched and whiny ... A V8 Growls... Not purrs, GROWLS!! It is mean, it is unstoppable. If you were an animal about to kill its prey, would you let out a high pitched yelp or a deep, I'm-gonna-eat-you-and-spit-out-your-bones growl??

But that is my opinion... you can keep your Vtec. If I can't have a V8, I want a forced2win BOXER instead... Just my .02

Layt

p.s. but imagine a V8 with AWD ... they won't do it cause it would just destroy everything out there, and it would ... ok GM, here's the hint ... out sell any performance car, hands down. V8+AWD+(25k-35k)= 1,000,000 sold each minute

you know I'm just playing.

ok V8 fans, you should also try hearing WRX with no muffler
I got this axle back (minus muffler) and the thing growl, roar like any proud stangs eventually, i got tired of all that bass and boom in the cabin. Stock WRX is too quiet for my taste but that's what i got for now.
I also love the sound of Ferraris; that raspy but silky smooth intensifying BBBRRRRAAAAAHHH! Actually, some of Saleen's got that similar sound (tho, one notch lower bass tone)

Best boxer sound I've heard is in a Boxster. I got the chance to cruise one all over Hof, Germany, including some hi-speed autobahn driving. To paraphrase Rush, it's absolute mechanical music! And it's sitting right in back of your seat. You can feel it do its magic...

How about an SVX flat 6? That sounds pretty sweet too... man, buttery smooth at idle, and heavenly at full song. Boxers rule. I had a porsche 911, and it had the same sweet sound. Too bad that car was so freaking unreliable

I love the sound of a WRX but I have to settle for my Liberty (Legacy) at the moment.

Does anybody have any .wav files of a WRX in flight???
