you might have mis geared or mis time your gear..
your car should be ok...
just don't do it too much...
it normal to mis gear once a while...

michael
ps: no need to worry about it unless your are grinding gears on a regular bases...

Every once in a while, when I'm shifting into first gear, there is a nasty sounding "chunk" sound. I assume this is normal, but probably not too healthy for my Impreza.

Before anyone hollers at me for downshifting at too high of an engine speed, I should note that I'm not throwing my Subaru into first gear while traveling very fast. I couldn't say for sure at what speed I'm rolling, but it's never more than 10 - 15 mph.

its normal that its hard getting into first if you are downshifting...you won't be able to get into first untill like 5mph to 0mph..
this is on normal driving...
when you are driving on a cold engine...(like in the morning...) you will have problems shifting into first and second...
this problem will go away once the car is completely warm or after 10-15 minutes of driving..
this condition is normal too..its the cold shutter from the clutches pressure plate...
hope this helps
michael
ps: if you are grinding every gear under normal driving (once the car is warm).. i think you should take it to the dealer for them to have a look, car should grind in every gear like you said...

it doesn't exactly grind, when i throw it into gear, it feels like im sort of forcing the gears into place or it feels like it's going to snap or break, like really really sharp throws.

I think the MT on my car just sucks. I only have 1500 miles on the car and it still doesn't shift smooth. I'm trying to figure out at what point do I stop using the break in excuse. I try to drive the car nice but it doesn't like it. I guess I can beat on it and hope it breaks under warranty.

Downshifting into first is one of the hardest stresses a tranny can take. Make sure you match your revs if you do this. Better yet don't D-shift into first, it's way to low....in fact second gear is borderline.
As the saying goes...."...each downshift is one less upshift..."
I D-shift to third and rarely into second and never in to first.
