Question Does an AT have gears like a MT?

Okay, this is a really dumb question, but I've never actually opened an automatic transmission. Does it have gears and shafts like a manual transmission does?

Reason why I am asking is because I am thinking about upgrading it, and the PTS kit LevelTen offers doesn't look like it includes any gears - just lots and lots of bands and rings. WHAzzup?

Automatics a filled with fluid, valves, gaskets, all sorts of stuff, but no gears. I don't really understand how they work, I just know there are no gears, and are bad hoo-doo magic!

Um, not quite. They use plantary gears, which is actually fairly similar to a sequential manual transmission. Not that I've ever had an XTrac box in a car, but I have driven one with a Lenco.

Learn here: http://www.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm

HowStuffWorks is a fantastic site.
