Question valve noise

How loud is your engine, not exhaust, at idle? do your hear the valve train distictly?

mine i can hear the clicking of the valves and whatnot easily, my nissan was really quiet a idle, even my old XT was also.

just trying to gauage if i am haeing engine probs.

Subaru's motors are well known for their valvetrain noise. Mine is quite loud at idle. What you are hearing is the noise of valve lash. It's nothing to worry about.

The subie 4cyl uses solid mechanical lifters, not hydraulic like most cars. That's the ticking you hear. It's normal, and will be louder when the engine is cold.

You may also be hearing the injectors fire off. They make a nice snapping sound.

SOHC Subarus do not have lifters at all. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000608.html

EJ25 DOHC heads are solid lifter except for 1996.
