Default Why no audio system?

What is up with the lack of an audio system for the STi? Is there some concealed reasoning behind this or is it just completely mindless? Only reasons I can think of would be weight loss and price reduction, in which neither would make enough of a difference (in my logic) to justify this inconvenience. I can't name a single recent make/model that isn't equipped stock with at least a radio.

By no means will this small problem prevent me from trying to get myself an STi, but it just seems a little thoughtless.

Weight of the car, as shipped.

The weight issue is more intricate than you'd expect. I may be able to add more color later.

Ford Mustang Cobra R - No radio
Subaru WRX STi Type RA Spec C - No radio
Lotus Elise?

They're out there, cars with no sound system, and I compliment car manufacturers that are gutsy enough to delete this option. It shows what they're really after. As I've said in another thread, I'd love it if my car came with no radio, less money for me to spend, and all that wiring/speaker/head unit adds up to a lot of extraneous weight and stuff to go wrong.

side airbags wiegh next to nothing. Its a silk bag (or synthetic bag) with what ammounts to a blasting cap. Maybe 1lb extra a side, plus some wiring

Personally, I'm glad they didn't put a system in there. I usually take them out days after I buy a car and replace with something nicer anyway, saves me the trouble. I'd rather get airbags then a stereo, you can add a stereo your self, can you add airbags your self? This is why Japanese manufactors don't bring their nice stuff over, we Americans bitch too much, always gotta complain about something. First gen USDM ITRs didn't even come with A/C, so what? Evo RS doesn't come with radios either, big deal.

By the way, if you're paying >=MSRP I'd expect most dealers to just throw in the sound system. (cough)

Default Bravo Subaru

I absolutely applaud this move by Subaru.

I've always asked Subaru to send us a pure unadulterated driver's car with no frills (like Honda did with the ITR). Who the heck wants to listen to a radio when you're driving this car anyway??? 2.5L of turbo boxer motor is the only thing I need to hear!!!!

Brilliant move Subaru!!!!

I think there just trying to keep cost down to the things we really need in a car. If you want a radio.. go to best buy and buy one.. would you rather them put in recaro seats or a nice radio. Like others say though.. When you have a nice car like this.. you want to hear that engine roar!

Au contraire. It seems to me that SOA did some research on this issue (like wading through the 33,000 posts in the NASIOC Car Audio, Video & Security forum) and concluded that a significant number of Impreza purchasers ditched their stock stereos soon after purchase. Deleting the stock radio saves both sides money.

I'm just curious as to what will be in the blank space where the stereo would go. Same goes for the speakers.

I have it on good authority that cost of the stereo was not an issue.

First of all...how much extra weight is the headunit, speakers, and amp going to put on the car? 20 pounds at most. Considering that the car weighs over 3000 pounds would the extra 20 pound make that much of a difference in performance?? doubt it. And as far as keeping the price low that is a bunch of baloney, these manufacturers buy parts in bulk so don't even tell me that it will keep cost down.

COST may not be an issue, but it may be an issue for selling price. It gives them an option to raise the price while offering the car at as low a base price as possible. It also gives them the image that some of you are supporting so much. If we were getting an RA Spec, it wouldn't have a radio. Since we aren't, SOA is able to get away with this. No big deal since the radio isn't normally great anyway. maybe the optional radio will be the Macintosh system in the Blitzen, and it would have driven the base price too high.

I'm glad about this. I would have yanked it out the day after I bought the car, anyway. I wanna put my own system in it.

It's a little hard to figure out what you're talking about given the context of this thread. If you're suggesting that I should be regretting the purchase of my WRX nearly two years ago, then you're wrong.

What was my alternative these last two years? To take an old 165 hp RS and pimp its exterior with a big wing, stickers and decals to pose as WRC car?

The only problem I see with buying a car with no sound system is the fact that there may be no stero wiring in the car whatsoever. I'm not a stereo junkie....so I wouldn't know where to begin in installing the basic speaker wiring in a car.

Bring it to an audio shop.
