Default Hard time shifting into 4th and 5th

I just got my car back from Irvine Subaru where I had the 5th gear synchro replaced (grinding). Now, it's difficult to shift into 4th and 5th gear. I'm not getting any grinding sounds, however, I have to put significantly more force to get it into 4th or 5th.

Has anyone had this problem before? Or perhaps know what this is?

Default Anyone?

I just got in my car and started shifting--with the car on and off. Now I can hear a slight metallic sound when the clutch is out. When I shut the car off, I can hear it for a 1/2 second or so. I checked the tranny fluid level--kind of hard to see it, but it looks to be low, almost dry!

I'm shaking a little bit since I drove nearly 100 miles already. Since it's dark, I'm going to check again with some new batteries in the flashlight.

Anyone experience this before???

Bizarre, I've checked my tranny fluid before and it had a color to it. There appears to be fluid, but I can't be certain. I'm not sure if it's just residue from hitting the sides while sticking it back in the container tube.

Isn't tranny fluid supposed to have a color to it?

Edit: One other thing: when I pulled out the dipstick and put it up to my nose, it smelled like something was burnt.

Looks to be fluid in there now, but it appears to be overfilled. And I'm still getting the rickety-rackety sound when the clutch is not pressed. I'm searching for answers as we speak.

Anyone have an idea of what's going on?

Took the car up to Irvine Subaru this morning. Had Chris (technician) ride along. He said the following:

1. Shift problems while stopped--you're going to have problems with this as the synchros won't be lined up when the car isn't moving. Seems odd as the showroom car didn't have this issue. The fact that I have a Karboy shifter makes it worse. He mentioned that the geometry of the Kartboy isn't exactly matched to the stock shift linkage.

2. Exhaust-sounding leak--thought I heard something from under the shifter. He said that it's the sound of the transmission. I'm wondering if having spacer washers between the rubber insolator and the metal shift ring may have opened a small gap for sound to come in?

3. Rickety-rackety sound from tranny--it's normal (don't remember the exact words he used to describe what it was).

I'm a little concerned because this problem happened immediately after having service done. Chris mentioned that the bolts are all torqued to specs and that I pretty much have a new transmission (in theory, since it was examined and has new fluid in it). He said to give a little time.

I may change out the Kartboy shifter this weekend if I keep having this problem. Weird, while driving with Chris in the car, the shifting problem didn't happen.
