Uber-Noobie Questions

As stated in some previous thread-hijackings .....

The Wife and I are planning to get a new-to-us USED Forester. Before finding this forum again we had decided on a 1998 S model. Here is what we want the car to have.

- Auto (gimme a break it's for the Wife and future baby hauling)
- ABS
- 4 Wheel Discs (I thought ONLY S models got rear discs)
- cloth interior
- Phase II 2.5L (which year model did the Phase II motors start in)

would like it to have rear LSD (2000 & newer correct ?)

So now after just a day of reading this forum we are now looking for:

2000 S w/ LSD

Please correct me if I am wrong ....

Also would you get an extended/used car warranty ?

Sounds like you already know enough. I wouldn't get the extended warranty, if you get a 2000 I think they should be fairly reliable. Can't help you on the engine question, I was wondering the same thing, so I'll just wait until somebody else answers it. How much were you planning on spending?

98 would be phase 1 DOHC. The 99+ forester is the phase2 SOHC.

Dave,

Rear discs = only on the "S" models
Phase II engine = any model year from 99 and on
Rear LSD = 00 and later

Also, the cold weather package on the 99 and later have the winshield wiper deicer as well (a good feature but it does increase the replacement cost of your windshield).

The earliest model year that would satisfy your needs is a 2000 S as you have correctly stated!

As for an extended warranty, it really depends on your tolerance for risk. I personally wouldn't get one if the records on the vehicle were clean.

I'd have to agree, but then I'm biased.

Only thing I wish I had that came later is the intermittent rear wiper. I hate having to manually switch it on/off each time for 1 swipe.
