Have a Nice Day? Baja Body Cladding revision

It seems Subaru has figured out that excessive different-colored body cladding is passe. Check out this picture of the 2004 Baja from the Detroit Auto Show:

It's a bit tamer. Any opinions?

Umm, the cladding is still there, just the car color is the same as its color.

It never really bothered me that much anyhoo. It is close to the look the Outback has, and not that nasty grey plastic color that the Avalanche has.

And it's a 2003, not a 2004.

Exclamation Nothing new really...

Yes, this color has been offered from day one but did anyone notice anything different about this Baja? Look at the door handles...they aren't body colored. The mirrors sort of look black too but this picture is too dark to tell. This might be the Baja Sport...then again I'm colorblind so what do I know.

Damn, good eyes. I didn't notice that. I think you're right, I've heard that there's supposed to be a less expensive model coming out soon, hopefully with a cloth interior.

Thanks...I have a question...how much money does not painting the door handles and mirrors take off a price tag? Cloth instead of leather makes a difference obviously but how much does it cost to put paint on some little plastic pieces? I think it would save more money to lose all the cladding.

I'm not complaining because if it brings the price down I'm all for it. Also, it doesn't look bad without the monochrome scheme.

Hopefully they will offer one by '04 w/out the cladding at a decent 20k price...that's when I get outta college and I'll definitely need some new wheels.

It doesn't bring the price down much. However, I do have a very reliable source that tells me that there will be a Baja coming out soon that will be about $3500 less or more. Should be out before the end of the year.

I love the Baja, but I've just got issues with the price. Its the same as a WRX or loaded Forester premium. I'm confident that Subaru will offer something less expensive soon.

Default Yep!

That's the new Baja Sport, coming out next month! It also has black mirrors and (2-bulb) headlights from the Legacy L too, unlike the leather-equipped Baja.

Wonder if that's a hard trunk cover. Hope it's standard - makes it easier for people living in urban (higer crime rate) areas to go shopping.

Nope...that would be really nice but it's a vinyl tonneau cover. It costs over $400 as an option I think, not sure though. I have been searching for aftermarket plastic ones lately but I have yet to find really anything other than lift kits.

I went to the local Subaru dealer today to look at the Bajas and Foresters...I was amazed at how small the Baja looks. The Forester has a higher ground clearance and even looks bigger with more neat features...I might become swayed by the more practical features of the Forester...Sorry Baja

Default Maybe they are

I guess this proves me wrong. According to this picture it looks like they will be offering a hard plastic bed (tonneau) cover. This is great.

I was there and sat right in that particular Baja Sport..which is what it indedd is..looks like it will retail just over 20 or so with a manual. No leather, looks exactly like a Legacy L premium inside, so imagine the differences between the outback and the regular legacy and there you are. I thing the Sport has less intense suspension as well, just like the diff between Legacy L and Outback. Looks good in silver, I think. The hard tonneau is exactly what that is, unfortunately, there was a note right in it that said that the "tonneau cover produced by aftermarket, not endorsed by nor to be offered by Subaru of America" It will be available in the aftermarkey, though. 400-600$ -ish.

The fact that Subaru "showed" that hard tonneau cover, tells me they're testing market reaction. If it gets a very positive response, I bet it does become a factory offered option. Keep in mind, most SOA-approved accessories are made by outside companies. Subaru just sub-contracts these items to outside venders.
