Unhappy more fuel to the Mitsu WRC fire.

The more I see it, the more it seems like a done deal... I guess we are in for a PUG era of rally cars in a few years.

I've said it before and I will say it again: They should bring back Group A.

Say it all you want Lou, that is NEVER gonna happen again.

It's just too expensive for most car makers and with the current design phylosophys out there in the real world, completely impractical for the major players.

The Lancer is going to be used in 2004, thats been confirmed! Earliest a Colt might apear is 2005.

I know it will never happen. I just dont want to see dune buggy's in the WRC ten years from now. Thats a little extreme but I like the idea of cars that actually come with AWD in the real world to be used. Oh well, guess I am just an outdated purist or something. WRC is still tops. Go Petter!!

WRC manufacturers have to use production based vehicles so I don't see any major dune buggy companies stepping up to the WRC arena.

Sounds like it would defeat the whole reason manufacturers have race teams, to sell current models. Wouldnt it?

Nice idea Group S. I'm just not enthralled by the idea of a horsepower limitation. I know that it adds big money to the research and development costs for racing teams -- and that big money usually wins. I'm just captivated by the idea of a 600hp 2,000 lb., AWD car.

John are you familiar with the Climbdance (?) video of Unser and Vatanen (sp?) and Pikes Peak? For the Pikes Peak Hillclimb I think that the car was an Open Class vehicle. But wasn't that car based on one of the FIA World Rally car classes?

From the first paragragh in the link, WRC has a 300 hp limitation as well? Is that a typo?

sure i know climbdance, had that for years, Ari is my hero.

That car was a development of the 405 paris dakar raid vehicle, which was itself a development of the 205 T16 GroupB car. The 405 Pikes Peak car had 4WS too.

WRC cars are oficially 300BHP *cough*

Perhaps.

But you have to admit, cars like this one would have been spectacular to see out in the woods:

Audi's prototype Group S car - the 002 Quattro

Oh yeah. No doubt the Group S cars were sweet. But what would the motivation for the manufacturers to dumb tens of millions of dollars into WRC be?
