I really wish the host would shut up a little more often. It would be nice to actually hear the car when they do the in-car camera. I'm so happy that we finally get a chance to see these cars though.

edit: And don't forget about the McLaren F1s!

Hey, the Cusco Subaru snagged 2nd in round 3, with the drivers moving to 2nd place in the points. I think this is going to be on for the next 2-3 weeks in the same time slot...right?

And W T F is a Vemac, anyway?

That was some great racing action. All the races were really eventful in both crashes and passing...I'm definitely keeping the next 3 Mondays of this month clear for JGTC.

Hopefully we'll get to see more of the Cusco Impreza as the season continues.

SPEED CHANNEL, KEEP THE JGTC!

edit- I also want to know what the hell a Vemac is!

Vemac RD180

Vemac is a prototype car, very limited production, kind of like the McLaren. Head office and manufacture is in England. Design is by Tokyo R&D.

For lots of great info go to: http://www.vemaccars.com/e/company/index.html

STREET CAR:

The street car uses a 180HP Honda VTEC 4-cyl motor. The GT car uses a Honda V6 built by toda racing

Wow, that was some awesome racing! Lots of really cool cars as well; I especially liked the Cusco Impreza (of course). I gotta wonder what Wayne Gardner had to be thinking after the first 2 races! Can't wait to see how the rest of the season plays out.

Good job Speed Channel! Keep it on the schedule!

PS. If anyone knows how the season progresses; please no spoilers.

After playing countless hours of GT2 it was great to finally see those cars on the track. Very good action in that series, and Japan has pleant of beautiful race tracks other than Suzuka.

A few thoughts/follow-ups...

The VEMAC was a very controversial car this year. The GT300 class was designed for cars with a higher production run (Silvias, Imprezas, 911s, etc.), but the VEMAC was a cause for concern because it brought a lot of GT500 class technology to the 300 class. The door was kind of kicked down by a Mosler MT900 to start with though...not exactly a mass-produced car.

How about that TI Aida track, lots of great turns. And Fuji is already a spectacular track; imagine how good it's going to be once they finish remodeling it next year. If you don't know, Toyota now owns Fuji and will be remodeling it in order to try to steal the Japanese GP away from Honda-owned Suzuka.

One other thought...if all of the GT300 cars use air restrictors to limit their horsepower to around 300, imagine the restrictor being used by the Viper...a car that makes way over 300hp STOCK!

Thumbs up

A big thank you to speed channel for bringing this to us. Of course, I want MORE though. I would love to see each race in its entirety. That is why it seems like the announcer never shuts up, they constantly cut to an "action" part of the race. None-the-less, very entertaining! That is what racing is supposed to be like!

Thumbs down

was anybody else dissapointed by the coverage?

I thought the camera angles were bad, the commentating poor, and the overall race feel was a little boring. Only time I got into it was when the Impreza was leading.

Of course something is better than nothing! I am glad we have the coverage we do, but there is much room for improvement. (although it looks as though Speed bought the coverage from other producers)

Go here to give them your feedback directly:

http://insider.speedtv.com/modules.p...705&forum=17&2

I was a little disappointed with the coverage, but I'll take what I can get until they decide to put it on 'for real'. Any coverage is an improvement over no coverage. Mainly, I just wanted the commentator to be quiet so I could hear the exhausts.

I thought it was kind of funny hearing the thick Aussie accents pronouncing names like Hironori Takeyuchi and Juichi Wakisaka...

Not the greatest coverage for sure, but remember that we're seeing a 30 minute highlight show...it's hard to translate the feeling of being there when you're just seeing snippets of the race.

I was really surprised when I didn't hear a voice over from Ralph Shaheen, so I'm not going to complain too much...

I too wasn't too bothered by the Aussie coverage. It's a lot more hectic because it's only a 1/2 hour show, but at least he doesn't make any mistakes. I like it better than the DTM or ETCC/FIA GT coverages. I do wish they'll show the track map and a brief desciption of the corners.

What I find surprising is that (lack of) mechanical grip of these cars. I was expecting them to behave more like DTMs with their big wings and supposedly high-tech stuff. But instead they slide around the corners more like BTCCs, which is wonderful in the spectator's point of view!

2 thumbs up.

The announcer pronounced some of those brands and models very odd. Nissan sticks out. I think he also said the Supra was running 4-cylinders?? What? There was also an incredible amount of sliding in their driving style. Do they run street tires?

AFAIK-Toyota intentionally uses a smaller, lighter turbo 4 cylinder to help with weight balance. They can put the engine farther back in the chasis thus helping weight distribution. I believe it's a turbo MR2 motor that they use...not 100% sure on that though.

From what I've read, the Supra race cars use the same inline 4 that the Corolla WRC car used.

Yes, I am pretty sure you are correct about it being the MR2 turbo motor in the Supra. Even 500 HP is not too hard with that motor when you have the kind of budget these guys have...

As far as the coverage, from what I understand, this was the only off-the-shelf program of JGTC coverage already in English. Remember, two years ago, the WRC coverage was only a 30 minute highlight of each rally, and now look what we get!!! If SPEED gets enough feedback to realize we are watching their JGTC coverage, I am sure that it can only get better for next year. They didn't want to spend alot of time/money translating whole races for nobody to want to watch them.

I just pray to god that Ralph Shaheen doesn't do the commentary when the coverage does get better. Man, I hate his voice. My wife makes me turn the volume down because she finds his voice so annoying, and I never get to hear the in-car commentary / engine sounds.
