Post Cannister at right rear of Impreza???

Does anyone know what the cannister at the rear of the 2000 2.5RS is for? It's part of the fuel system, but what's is purpose?

Anyone?

I might be wrong, but if its anything like the emissions controls on other cars I've owned, it is an activated charcoal filter for the tank vent. Filters gasoline vapors out of the air that vents its way out of the tank when you fill, or as the air heats and must escape, etc...

But, then again, I could be wrong. If I am, try not to flame me too bad. 'kay.

That's exactly correct, I believe. I asked a Subaru tech once what that was while my car was in for service and he told me about the same thing. Without it you would probably smell the gas vapors, pollute the environment, and about a dozen other things that are either bad for you, annoying, illegal, or all of the above.

Thumbs up

That's correct. It is a charcoal filter. Make sure that you never overfill your gas tank or you can flood the filter and ruin it. Kills gas mileage.

Why would it kill gas mileage?

Are we talking about the box that make it tougher to get at one of the bolts holding the rear sway bar on? I saw that and figured it was the fuel pump or somthing. That last charcoal filter I saw was on my fish tank!
