Arrow Need Local Help: Loud Turbo noise?

I spent the day with a friend of mine installing another turbo on my car (PE1818) and it makes a loud machine gun type noise which gets louder and louder as the revs go up.

I don't think it's an exhaust leak because #1 We were very careful torque'ing (sp?) everything down #2 The noise seems to be coming right from the turbo and #3 There's not really any excessive exhaust odor or smoke.

I need a second opinion from somebody here who has heard an exhaust leak or might be able to help diagnose the problem for me. I hope it is an exhaust leak and not a bad turbo (I did buy it used )

So if somebody could possibly take a little time out of there day sometime this week, I'd really appreciate it. I'll even buy you a beer

Thanks,
Aziz

If it's a thwap, thwap, thwap, noise. Make sure the exhaust manifold and uppipe are properly tightened. I had that happen to Mav1c's car. It was loud. It's an exhaust leak. good luck

could it possibly be the turbo prop shaft or turbines? if something is unbalanced or off a little, then at high boost it could make a noise that it would'nt make at lower boost?

A small exhaust leak will sound like that, mine did 1st time around the block.Sounded almost good ,,keyword;almost.
Re tighten everything, still does it,get a spray bottle with soap and water .Spray the areas around the gaskets, upipe, downpipe, and turbo well, then start the car and have another person stuff a rag in the exhaust tip to create more back pressure. You should either see(bubbles) or hear more clearly where the leak is.

When you had the exhaust leak, was there an odor or smoke coming from the upipe to turbo or turbo to downpipe or was it just a loud noise?

I swear it sounds like it's coming from the turbo, but I'm just not positive. I guess I'll have my work cut out for me next weekend

An idea, just to rule out the possibility of an exhaust leak, is to take a strong mixture of soapy water, and spray or pour it around the areas of your flanges and gaskets, if there's a leak you'll see bubbles start to come out. RHdude's recommendation is a possiblity, but it wouldn't sound as you described, being that the turbine shaft spins at such high rpm. Also make sure you're bov or bypass valve isn't lifting. Another way to verify if it is actually coming from the turbo or not, if possible, get a long screwdriver, and push it up to any part of the turbo with a bit of force, and put your ear on it, you'll know right away if the sound is coming from the turbo
