Question Whats with this hesitation?

This is a new problem that just started about A week ago....if im in 3rd gear and the rpms drop below 1800-2000 and i step on the gas i get a hesitation like feeling, almost acting as if my car is out of gas (but i had a 1/2 tank) Could it be a spark plug or dirty fuel injector problem? If its plugs (i have 58000 miles and havent changed them yet) what should i replace them with? If it might be injectors, what products work best to clean em?

thanks for any help...

Replace those plugs!!!!
If it just started I would say it's probably caused by something that is dirty or worn.

BUT, there is a lot of talk about hesitation in Subaru's. I have it in my MY00 RS, but from 4k - 4,500 rpm.

It always helps a little when plugs are replaced.

Forgot to suggest what to get....
I think you have the 2.5 engine? DOHC?
If so, go for some platinum NGK's.
They aren't any better performance wise than the normal NGK's, but if the plugs are as difficult to replace in the 2.5 DOHC engine as I've heard. You'll be well served by getting more life out of the platinum plugs.

OBS is 2.2L
Are you the original owner, do you know maintenance history.

60k service. (plugs, pcv, and filters for sure)

Resetting the ECU might help as well. BUT, listen carefully for knock. What MAY be happening is that our "learning" ECU may think it has heard knock before AND decided to permanently retard timing around then.

BTW, from insider info, when you get a tune up at a Subaru dealership, one thing they do IS reset (a real reset w/ the Subaru OBDII) the ECU, which plays a big role in the apparent nice fell of the car.

BTW, our engines like to knock a little (more a ping than full knock) at low RPM, sub 1500 in my case (i've experience it myself before and after my TEC-II).

Hey Guys,

My 98 has a weird hesitation every now and then too. Engine temp doesn't seem to matter, nor does weather conditions. It usually occurs under 2000 RPM's. It feels exactly as if it ran out of gas for about a second or two. Sometimes it happens while taking off from a dead stop. I let out on the clutch just a tiny bit with RPM's aroun 1200-1400 and boom, it just dies. Anyone else have any similar problem and found a solution. Thanx.

what a freakin coincidence. The same thing started with me. A week or so ago I had a hint of the problem, just occationally. Today the problem is pretty bad. I have a '99 RS with 21,500 miles on it. I was thinking about running some dry gas or some injector cleaner.

There is an acknowledged problem in the 97/98 2.5. The cheap fix is here:
http://www.geocities.com/hobiegary/hesitation.htm

BTW, I experieced this right after an oil change. One of the running theories is that the air bubbles caused by the empty filter circulating through causes this. An ECU reset fixed it for me, and I just fill up the filter with oil before I put it on. It hasn't recurred.

I have a MY00 (SOHC) and at 28,000mi it started missing and hesitating real bad. It was all the plugs. Champions suck. 60,000mi yeah right! Fortunately they are easier to change in the SOHC than the DOHC. My wife's Forester is impossible to get to. It's at 42,000mi and I'm dreading the sparkplug change.

Change your plugs. Go with whichever flavor NGK you like. You'll see a good difference in the car.

There was a thread on this earlier along similar lines under "slight stumble" or something along those lines. The concensus then was a bad O2 sensor which showed up during the switch from lean to rich cycle, but this was only from a dead stop.

Just a thought.

I just put in some gum out fuel system treatment. So far so good. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
