Default guess that noise!

have a turbo xs stage 4 kit. when the car has been running for less than 20 minutes, hard acceleration causes a horrible screeching noise. It happens around 3000 - 4000 rpm, when the car really starts to take off. it sounds like a belt, but can't be, all the visible ones look good. my clutch was suspect before i even installed the stage 4. i had the classic take off shutter it seems a lot of people have. when the screeching starts, it doesn't seem like i'm losing any power or the clutch is slipping. i've tried at low rpm's to get the boost up to see if it's boost related, but the screeching seems to intensify with rpm instead of boost. could an exhaust leak cause this type of noise? any other suggestions? If you think it's a clutch, what a good clutch flywheel combo that won't kill my transmission?

Default similar sounds

I have a similar problem. I went so far as to install new intake manifold gaskets, up-pipe gasket, new vf-35 (!), tried stock vs. aftermarket intercooler, I am not sure what it is. maybe it is the tranny as you suggest. Why would it whine vs. slip and smell funky?

Have you heard this horrible screeching noise on another car [non-WRX]? Or is it specific to your WRX [and possibly other stage 4 WRX's]?

Since you state it happens when "it really takes off" - what about the turbo itself or surrounding components [IC hose, Turbocharger Intake Pipe,]?

uppipe leak at uppipe-header connection...

gasket isnt thick enough and since oem gasket is two pieces of metal sandwiched together you get the same noise as if you blew into a piece of grass held b.w ur fingers. it goes away after 20minutes b.c the leak is small enough that the expansion of the uppipe and header from the heat seal the leak...

irvine subaru (a vendor on the club) sells extra thick gaskets...should cure the problem...

as far as it being rpm or boost related its both...as rpm rises there are more exhaust pules creating the ability to produce more boost as the turbine can spin X speed at Y rpm there is always "extra" exhaust gas that cant be utilized so it leaks out progressively worse as rpm/boost rises

I have the same problem but mine goes away in a few minutes. Its an uppipe leak. Mine seems to seal itself out rather quickly.

Default tonight

Yes, I will try to put in the new gasket tonight. I have already (with help from some great folks like Darthchicken and Jeff Sponaugle) replaced the up-pipe turbo interface gasket and the intake manifold gaskets. We just went at it and got them replaced in a hurry. Need to do the bottom gaskets asap though. That squeal is way loud.

i think you're right. i re-torqued all the bolts last night, and it still makes the noise. but now it makes it in nuetral too, just not as bad. i called irvine, they said to use the stock gasket, they don't offer a thick gasket. did you get your gasket elsewhere?

WOW!!! I figure that I was the only person that was having that problem. It is driving me crazy. I put all new gaskets in except for the up-pipe to turbo. That could probally be the problem area. It only happens when boost is over 6 psi.

Are you guys following the proper tightening sequence, and using a torque wrench set at 26 - 30 ft/lbs?

The graphite gaskets from prestige subaru fixed my leak.

I also left out the two up-pipe/turbo bracket bolts. They supposedly create a pulling effect on the lower flange.

I don't have pictures but you'll see them pretty easily.

On the up-pipe to turbo flange, there are 5 bolts total, but only 3 of those actually connect the up-pipe and turbo.

Look around in there and determine which two are going into brackets and not through the actual bolts holes of the exhaust housing turbo flange itself.

I just took the bolts off completely and didn't worry about the bracket.

Some people make shims with washers and put them in the bracket bolts to space it out more but I never wanted to have to get to the up-pipe again.

Prestige gaskets + bracket bolts was the winning combination for me. Been about 2.5 months/4k miles now without any signs of a leak.

Damn I also thought I was alone in this..I was getting so fed up with it that I was actually willing to take it to a dealer if I didnt get any anwsers here.

This is the gasket on the BOTTEM of the Up pipe correct?

I had an Up-pipe I got from some one in the Private parts for sale section, an Exhaust Depot Down Pipe and a AEM cold air Intake. I got tired of the noise and constant exhaust leaks when I used the Irvine Subaru graphite gaskets( 3 times on that lower flange), so I just put it back to stock (Used the original gaskets)and am more then happy with it...till this noise came along..and its really pissing me off...Someone fix this and let me know if it works.

Proper tightening sequence?? WHat is the sequence?

The proper way to install the up-pipe is to tighten the two bolts on the LOWER flange (manifold/up-pipe) first. I believe it's 26 foot pounds.

THEN tighten the upper bolts. (turbo/up-pipe)

Default the squeal is gone

fixed.

check the 02 sensor.

check the gaskets on each end of the up-pipe.

it was one of these that fixed the squeal, I think it was the 02 sensor (having an 02 sensor socket helps out a lot.

oMg! im not the only one with this noise. i have the same exect symptoms! the car starts to squeel. it isnt as loud inside as it is outside. whenever i pass with rpms somewhat up there and boost somewhat over 5psi, there is an annoying screaching noise that just sounds horrible. well, to me. my friends like it, but im starting to feel loos of throttle response and it seems slower. it could also be me being all scared thats making me think that my car is actually slow. anyhow... im getting new gaskets and gonna have someone reinstall the gaskets with my aftermarket turboxs uppipe. hope that works!!!!!!
