Default Trans cooler sprayed fluid all over the highway. I hope I was able to save trans :(

2002. 2.5rs automatic
mods: trans cooler, headerback exaust/cams/intake

Hey guys, pardon bad spelling. My hands are numb still from the 10 degree weather & wind off the lake. Even though I had gloves and a huge coat.

Anyways. I was driving home from school and smoke was pouring out from underthe hood and comming out from behind the car like it was on fire. I got off the hihgway asap. I unfortunally hit a stoplight. When I was taking off slowly from the light, the car would rev but no power was being made. It felt like it was about to stall. Well I got the car to move over to the closest spot I could park in downtown chicago without getting hit bysomeone. I poped the hood and fluid was spraying out from a torn hose comming from the trans cooler. I tried to stop the leak but the fluid was way to hot and it was way to cold. I got a flatbed to take the car to the dealership.

I noitced a few things, the towtruck driver tried to put the car in D and drive it up the flatbed but the car would just rev (then I stoped him, because I relised what he was doing. I was already a half block away to take the train home). Also my trans oil temp light didn't come on.

What do you guys think the damage was. Again pardon for spelling and grammar. my brain is also a tad frozen ATM.

I dont understand why you kept driving....

I had an old ford econoline that would leak like mad sometimes, couldnt figure out what triggered it. The fluid would get low enough that it couldnt change gears. If you stopped and didnt rev the car up I dont see why any damage would occur. A fair amount of fluid would still be present in the transmission and TC after the pump was dry.

If you called to get your car towed, obviously that meant that you didn't think it was driveable, so what in world was the tow truck driver thinking trying to drive it?!? When you installed the trans cooler, did you use specific trans hose? Trans hose is made stronger then say gas hose, because of higher pressure and temperatures. Hopefully you didn't mess anything up, and the trans was just slipping because it was so low on fluid.

Well, at the point I saw smoke and was getting off the highway I was coasting. I had an header install 2 days ago, so I figgured mabye a gasket went. Nothing in the car signaled to anything being wrong with the trans or the car(trans temp gauge nor temp oil light gave warning), just the visual of smoke. Once I crused off the ramp and hit the stoplight is when I knew what was wrong. Then I pulled a right and stoped the car out of traffic to see what was wrong. Thats when I saw the trans oil sraying out of a hose connecting to the trans cooler. I didn't intentionally drive on it, I can't just stop the car on the highway nor on the offramp. I went to the closest save place to pullover and stop.

Strokes Kia-Isuzu-Subaru in North Charleston, SC did the installation when I used to live in that area. The install was done by a dealership. To the best of what I know, it was done correctly. This is considering it was done 10/19/01 which was well over a year ago.

Hopefully they will replace the hose, put in some fluid, and it will work fine. At least there was still fluid spraying when you popped the hood, meaning there was still fluid left. It was probably just low transfer clutch pressure, so your car will most likely be fine with some fluid, and hoses. (Fingers crossed)

Thanks for the input. This definatly put a hamper on what should have been a good week. (finishing up classes and going on a 3 week vacation) But again, thanks for the input. Hopefully it is just as minor as you said. In worstcase it would be a rebuild of the trans..right?

I'd say your tranny is prob fine. Doesn't sound like it went too long with little or no fluid.

The AT trans light didn't go on because there was probably no trans fluid around the sensor......sorta like what happens on blown headgasket.....you loose all the water, and you have air in the cooling system, and it doesn't transfer temp nearly as well as water....so the gauge doesn't do much of anything.

Wow, you are having some bad luck with people who don't know what they are doing. If your trans is broken, you should just tell the delearship it is their fault for trying to drive it.
