Question wrx 5-speed vs wrx ver 5 or 6 sti 5-speed

what is the difference between our USDM wrx 5-speed vs the JDM wrx sti version 5 or 6 5-speed?

I mean they probably have lighter flywheels and better gear ratios or even a stroger clutch. But is the transmission essentially the same one? How strong are they old STi ones compared to our wrx 5-speed?

Just curious. Because the GC8 domestic wrx and Sti were already pushing 280+bhp stock from the factory by 1998.

Cheers

Nick

The old RA boxes are a bit stronger than the GD 5spd (don't know how that translates to reg STi boxes.
The 6spd is by far the stongest.

Why is the 5-speed type RA stronger? gearsets, clutch? what about the STi? I mean the 5-speed used by subaru STi wrx should be stronger than the regular wrx but by how much and why?

I am not talking about the new 6-speed. I know it's strong.

The regular STi v. 5+6 have a hardened gear set.

Can we fit those to the current year wrx?

It will be cheaper than the 6-speed...both the gearset and/or transmission.

Does anyone know how much more this gearset would cost with the DCCD?

Nevermind, I just found it on rallispec's site but now I have another question. How difficult will this install be in a GDA WRX? I'm looking at the v5 STi RA set since it includes a front LSD. While a 6 speed would be nice, it's not worth the extra $$$ if I can have the DCCD and short ratios for under $5000.

I would think this is an easier installation than a 6 speed would be...does anyone know?

Easiest way to get DCCD and a 6-speed.

WRX tanny swap is $5k plus labor plus DCCD and labor if you want = lots o' time and $$$.

Easy way
Sell your WRX for $21000
Buy 2004 STi w/ 6-speed and DCCD and A HELL OF A LOT MORE STUFF THAN WE HAVE.

They aren't even in price, but they are close enough to sell your car and but an STi instead. Just my opinion.

If I could afford to do that, I would. The loss I'd take on selling my car now and the increase in insurance by getting the STi is a bit more than I can afford. My car is here to stay. While the STi would be nice, I'm perfectly happy with my humble WRX.

I figure sooner or later my tranny is going to break. When that happens, the option of installing a DCCD gearbox at the cost of a little more labor appeals to me.

Looking on Rallispec, a v5. STi RA gearbox with the DCCD will cost $4850. If the gearbox is already put together, installation shouldn't be too difficult (even with the additional labor needed to make the DCCD work). My question was concerning other parts that would need to be replaced with this swap (the rear end, etc.) and how much the rest of the expenses would add up to.

I don't think you need to modify anything to make the Ver 6 STi tranny fit. I guess someone should ask Greg or Dave at Rallispec. I'm sure they know. As for how much power it can take, I don't know. I'm at 250 whp right now and not seeing any (knock on wood) problems from the stock tranny. -Bolster

Actually there is a kit required in addition to the 6 speed itself.

5-Speed to 6-Speed Conversion Kit
This kit includes all parts necessary to allow the use of the STi 6-speed in a standard Impreza model originally equipped with the 5-speed. Purchase either RST-1102 or RST-1102B gearbox and add this kit. Special Order 6 Weeks.

Kit includes the following parts: propshaft, STi short-throw shift linkage, standard STi 240mm flywheel, flywheel cover, standard STi 240mm clutch assembly, transmission crossmembers, STi hardened transmission mount, clutch fork, exhaust hanger, STi standard shift knob, shifter trim & boot, rear ring & pinion set, rear diff. gasket & seals. Different clutch & flywheels can be supplied at additional cost.

RST-1102kit 5MT to 6MT Conversion Kit -- $2300
