Thumbs up New Borla header/SuperTrapp review

I just got the new Borla headers and a 2.25" cat bat exhaust installed. My muffler of choice was two 4" SuperTrapps (black/steel) mounted side by side with a custom bracket.

Results: INCREDIBLE!

I simply cant tell you the deepness and throatiness the car now has! I do not know of anyone else in the I-Club who has tried this setup but... it IS incredible. Just the sound alone makes it worth it.

I am not *****ting you when I say the car sounds like a 64 Stingray with side-pipes.
The neat thing about it is, at idle, it is a real subtle burble.

As far as performance... I have not had a chance to compare vs stock because the car is so loud. (It does attract alot of attention in town ) It is probably illegal as far as decible levels right now. Currently I have all 12 tuning rings on each of the Trapps. I really love the fact the if I do get hassled by the local cops... I can just take some rings off to make it a little quieter.

Im going to reset my ECU today and I'll post a performance review later.

Oh yeah, BTW: (2 quick comments proving Im not bias with this review) Leaving the muffler shop there was a teen-age couple that I cruised by... the girl said "that is too cool!" Also, I passed a group of "ricers" that where huddled around a slammed civic, as I passed them... every single person stopped talking and stared in awe.

There's a guy that autoxes here with a Porsche 928 with a Supertrapp, & I swear it sounds just like an American V8 at idle as well.

Rich L,

Could you make a sound sample of that and post it here? I would love to hear it! I thought for a quick second about trying it but just didn't have the huevo's to actually go through with it.

I have the Borla headers with the Stromung Dual Tip and it's pretty close to a V8 when cruising. But get on it hard and the sound reverts back to 4cyl sound.

After driving around yesterday... I can claim that this setup [with 24 rings]... is for only the hardcore who think: "I like noise and people to stare at me"

First the bad news:
There IS noticable torque loss (keep in mind I have ALL 24 rings on [12+12]) So Im going to try some tuning and reduce the # of rings to increase back pressure and maybe regain some torque.
Keep in mind, I have a stock MY99 intake.

Good news:
The sound is truely unbelievable. Quiet and a hint of burble at idle. Very deep and loud with throttle in low-mid rpms, slightly less deep pitch when above 4500 rpm. Sounds something like a Stang with flowmasters. People with definatly think you have put a V-8 in your Subbie.

When in a higher gear at a lower rpm, you get a "choppy" reverberation that echos throughout the cockpit. (In other words you might open the sunroof thinking there's a Huey hovering over you. At times when cruisiing on level land, keeping the throttle neutral, the bass deminishes, so highways driving is ok for now.

Sorry- pics or sound. Can someone email me a cheap way to post a sound file? I'll scan some pics ASAP.

Im kinda disappointed with the performance loss. Butt-dyno indicates maybe no less than .5secs slower. This is ok for me because Im getting a turbo installed for Christmas and can use less back pressure. But until then... I'll try to tune her some more.

Angry

Dratts!!!

you would think a guy like me who watches star trek would be smart enough to figure out to posts some pics!

wrong.

Anyway I'll set up a hyperlink to my Photopoint album tomorrow.
I cant believe the site is down today.

or for those of you that cant wait.... go over to the NJ section of the Members list.

Update to review:

I originally posted:
"When in a higher gear at a lower rpm, you get a "choppy" reverberation that echos throughout the cockpit. (In other words you might open the sunroof thinking there's a Huey hovering over you."

That "choppyness" is diminished by at least 75% after the turbo install.

Dont get me wrong. Its still over 95 decibles at WOT but the above choppyness is gone when in a higher gear at a lower RPM.

rpone605,

Supertrapps are small and very light.
They are basicly fancy glasspak mufflers...

I figure two of them would be more quiet as well as giving me more flow.

But the biggest factor is that it looks much better than just one!

I will try to post some audio clips...
but dont hold your breath cuz I had a hard enough time just posting pics!

BTW: thanks for the link
