Post speed limiter

Top speed is electronically limited to 112 mph according to Road & Track's road test summary. Can this be over-ridden?

Holt...the last test info I saw on the RS was for a MY98, and I think it was an automatic. I brought up the same point time ago, and had it stuffed right back down my throat. I'm pretty sure our cars can do more than 112. I'm still breaking mine in, so I can't tell ya.

I'll be heading out to the 275 loop next weekend, and now that my car is finally broken in(2 300 mile round trips last weekend to get myself up to 1320), I'll let you know if I can exceed 112 in a manual. I'm not gonna go over 115, there's only about a 5 miles straight-away, and I'm not pushing my luck.

MY98's are speed limited. All new models are not (I played on my way home from Denver yesterday too ).

I hit 120 with it still pulling far far away from a 97-98 Maxima in MY00 auto, so that isn't a problem with an auto either.

How does everyone know how far over 120 they're going. In my MY97 2.5GT 5spd, I've had the speedometer burried at 120 on the track, does the RS speedometer go over 120?? Know to see if I can fix the lean problem with my new S-AFC.

For those guys with a '98/'99RS they have speed limiters, so do the Legacy GT's (I know b/c I have one) Anyways, the cheapest way to cut the limiter (short of replacing the ECU) is the JC Sports Torque Chip. If you plan to stay N/A get the TC1, if you're going turbo get the TC2.

hmm..i have peggeed the needle in a my98 RS automatic. *shrug* maybe i just got LUCKY!

edit: more than few occasions (bad gary..bad ) and have had it completely off the 120 mark..so even if there is a 10% error in the speedo at that speed, that still puts me up over 112 (hmm...) oh well..time for some thinking.

Thanks for all the responses. My car is a MY00 RS 2.5 manual, with just over 1000 miles. I understand that MY98, which is what R&T tested, has a limiter but later models do not. So, the next question is...what is the top speed?

drag and HP limited as well as gearing to right around 136 IIRC a couple people with a HUD had either 130 or 132 or 136 displayed on the way somewhere. *shrug* i don't know the EXACT top speed..but i would imagine around 125-135.

I've buried my needle in my MY00 AT RS. My friend in a MY99 MT RS buried his needle on the way to Vegas. Don't know the exact speed, but we both felt the car still pulling beyond what the spedometer says.

I don't think they are actually speed limited but rather RPM limited.

This topic comes up every once in a while and never seems to get resolved. I'm not sure Subaru was consistent with the speed limiter, as is seen by some of the comments here. Most say they've been easily over 112mph, but then ralyrcr says his turbo car is limited. GTBGUY says his 2.5GT is limited, but Kachukaa has been over 120mph in his '97 2.5GT, and I've done it both my '97 and my old '99 2.5GT.

As for the question of knowing how fast over 120mph we've been, Kachukaa, it's just a matter of ratioing the RPMs. At 3000rpm in 5th gear the car is doing about 67mph or so. I've hit 5850rpm in the '99 which works out to (67mph/3000rpm)*5850rpm = 130.65mph. It's not a perfect calculation (it's tough to read the speedo and tach with enough accuracy to be exact) but it gives a good idea.

Ya, I hit about 125 in my 1997 Impreza L manual transmission, I think my limiter was around there cause it kicked down while racing a volvo.. he on the other hand did not have a limiter, bastard.
Do we have to change the chip to go faster, or is there an easier /cheaper way???

I have MY98 RS and have gotten the needle vertical. It takes a while to get past the 120 mark. The speedo stops at 120 :-( Use to average about 110 down rte 3 late at night but now there are too many police.

Does anyone know the drag coeficient on the Impreza? Because it dosent look very aerodynamic to me. That big hood scoop must produce alot of drag. Lets face it, the Impreza isnt made for top speed. I have an 88' Nissan Pulsar that hits 200 km/h (120 mph).
