Question STi Intercooler fitment.

I have a lead on a STi v5 intercooler from over in the UK. Does anyone know if the v5 intercooler will fit on the RS? I know there were questions of the WRX IC fitting. Any experience/ ideas?

I like to know as well. I don't see why they don't fit. Is it because of the intake manifold and the throttle body being too far back? Or what other things get in the way?

I wish I still had my RS so I can make a comparison. I think the L model intake manifold and TB position might be a little different than the RS and would be curious if it fit the 2.2L.

HMMMM?????

Yah... a 3x6x18 IC will fit... asked for dimensions. Maybe Ill make a cardboard mockup and try to shoehorn it in. Dan said something like they (at least the regualr wrx IC) will fit, you have to shorten the connection to the TB though. Just curious to hear from someone who *has* done this and what problems they encounter, what the clearance was like, etc etc.

I also have a lead on a gently used MY2000 WRX IC, but I have heard some WRX ICs don't fit. I think only the pre 97 WRX ICs fit, but I am not sure...

If you do a seach, you'll find my post where I explained exactlt why it won't fit (the post V2 one). But, basically, if you cannot "move" the TB 3 inches towards the radiator, forget about your STi IC.

Midwayman, I posted that same question on Scoobynet and a polite Brit (there are a couple) suggested www.avoturbo.com & www.mrtrally.com.au for replacement early style intercoolers.

Where did you get your info re a custom 3x6x18 core? I know I've seen them as part of various kits, but who actually makes them? Spearco?

Thanks Alex,
Ok that's what I thought. Now I have to compare my base model intake/tb setup to a 2.5 RS intake/tb setup.

the 3x6x18 ic is the stage III setup for the ludespeed kit. Apparently Tom managed to shoehorn that in.

STI v5 is 39.5cmx25.5cmx9cm

6" tall IC is as good as NO IC. If your IC has to be 6" tall total, the core can only be 3-4" tall, since the end tanks have to be AT LEAST 1" each. So, the IC is very unefficient with a core this short, since the air has only 3-4" to travel to get cooled. That is one of the reasons I gave up my project and got a WRX. Unless you get a IC that is resing on the firewall, there is no way to do it.

I think the 6" is the core measurement

Here's a photo from Ludespeed's website:

Looks decent sized--but who can tell just by looking at it?

Of course there is a way, get the sti intercooler plus intake manifold, you`ll find all hole you need to plug your sensors, fuel rails etc... well that`s for DOHC 98 RS, if not you will have to machine both 98 and 99 manifolds to get the proper one, it can be done... I`m sure, Because I have..
