Post Hard Shifting

Had my car for 6 months now and haven't got a reason why my gear is so hard to shift from any gear to 2nd gear. Double clutching helps sometimes. It's usually after sitting for a couple of hours and just started up. i crawled under the car today and found all the shift links intact and nothing messing it up down there.

Mine does the same. I miss shifts all the time. I just think its our stock trans. If you get a shifter kit it supposedly fixes it.

I've got the same problem shifting into reverse. Sometimes it goes, sometimes I've gotta play around a bit before it engages, I dunno.

Hopefully there's a cheap fix or adjustment for this? Anyone?

Try flushing the clutch fluid with Synthetic dot 4 brake fluid. Also try Redline 75w90ns oil for front trany and 75w90 for rear diff. When I changed mine at 9000 miles there were metal flakes everywhere. If that doesn't help then it might be the master/slave clutch cylinder or worse the throw-out bearing. Anyway, mine is hard to shift too.

good luck

i do got the same problem. everytime i shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. i actually need to force the shifter in. and somwtimes when i put in reverse, i also need to make a few try. the shifter just won't get into reverse gear. but one thing that i know is that u have to have a complete stop of the car to shift into reverse, if not, u'll hear a "grouch" sound. this tranny problem i've realize since i got the car from the seond day.Really dunno how to fix. i wanna get it smooth like a Bimmer's gear box.

ciao.

no problems for me here. Try pushing your clutch pedal all the way in.
Reverse is hard cus there's no synchro. What you can do is before going to reverse, shift to first or any other forward gear and then go reverse.

try double clutching for the revserse prob... there's no synchro, so need to double clutch. it works for me.

but the 2nd gear is a real pain... i might flush and change my front trans fluid next week to see

I don't really have the second gear problem, but I get the reverse thing all the time. I usually end up double clutching, but it's frustrating. And I hate that it makes a nasty noise until you come to a dead stop.

Does anyone know if the pre-02 RS shifters:
1. will fit my 95 1.8 L?
2. shorter than my stock shifter?

No 2nd gear probs, but my reverse is finicky. Some times multiple double clutch trys does not do it either. I will try the foward/reverse thing.

Subaru builds a tight transmission that takes a while to break-in.
It will last forever though.

I recommend changing the tranny fluid too.
It always helps shifting, even if you replace it with fresh stuff of the same kind.

is double clutching into reverse the same as just regular double clutching while downshifting? should i just give it some gas before pressing in the clutch?

guys dont make the reverse thing orse than it really is... all it takes is... if it does not engage while putting the car in reverse... VERY slowly let up off the clutch.. it will slip in every time. i do not honestly knwo the mechanices of it, but truthfully, double clutching is nto necessary. just do as i said... LIGHTLY and SLOWLY let up on the clutch and it slips right in.
