CE light puzzle
My car is a MY00 auto. Mods are intake, exhaust, fuel computer, and plug wires for power.
Lately the car's CE light would come on while I'm driving. Past few times I would just reset it, today I brought it to my dealer and had them check it out. They told me it basically has to deal with the fact that the car is searching for a 2nd O2 sensor reading, etc. They thought I had gone to a straight pipe. I don't. They put my car on a hoist, see all the stock emissions system in place, can't figure anything out. Finally one guy just blurts out, "your backbox is too big. You're not getting any backpressure at all." Now my question is this. I KNOW it has nothing to do with the piping of my backbox (3"). I've had the exhaust almost since I bought the car and never had any CE lights then. Its only happened now. I've had the car turbo'd before. It is now back to NA. I've narrowed the problem down to bad cats. Why? Because the shop that installed/ripped out the turbokit lost my MY00 cats, and I'm now using MY98 cats. That is the only thing I can think of. Cause I basically haven't touched the car since I ripped out the turbo. Even after I did that, the car was fine for a couple of months until recently when this fiasco came up. Any thoughts?

Well... I keep getting a CE light too... here's how it went...
MY00 RS stock, 10k miles, hadn't had a problem. Got a recall notice about the O2 sensor, so I took it in to get replaced. Seemed to be the first at the dealership to bring it in... they replaced it. A couple days later, CE light. So I take it in and OBDII reports bad O2 sensor, so they replace it again. 1 day later, the light comes on again. Take it back and while it's idling in the bay waiting for the mechanic to take a look, the light goes off, and they hook up the scantool no code! So I take it home, get in it the next day, CE light. Up until now it hasn't done anythign weird besides the light. Now, every once in a while, when cruising, steady RPMS around 2.5-3k, lose power. I reset the ECU, and the lights comes on again after a few days. Then it goes off after about 10 minutes. Then on again a few days later. I reset again, take the car for test drive, light comes on. Next day it's out. That was about a week ago and haven't had any problems since. I'm going TEC-II. Maybe that'll fix it. Who knows... |

But your lights goes away by itself right? Mine doesn't, it stays on.

I have a check engine light. Sometimes it turns off but mostly stays on all the time. I've taken it to Gillman Subaru and they said that cylinder 2 was miss firing. They replaced the spark plug wire. I got the CE light again and then took it to Austin-Ifinity Subaru and they said that cylinder 2 was miss firing and they found that the fuel injector on cylinder 2 was bad and So they replaced it. They changed the 02 sensor too ounce I showed them my recall notice. The car ran like a champ and my milage increased from 220 miles to 270 miles per fillup. The CE light is back. What should I do?

Wait a sec...I'm no expert here but you said your using 98 cats?
Didn't the 98 only have 1 o2 sensor or something mounted in the first converter, but nothing in the second one and thats why the streight pipe option which eliminates one of the converters is only available for the 98? That makes sense since you said the computer is looking for second 02 and since there is no place to mount it in the second cat... but you also said you looked and all the emissions stuff is in place, which means both 02 seonsors, right? Or I could just be freakin nuts... |

Yup, the mechanics said that both O2 sensors were there. Unless they're blind or just plain stupid. In the case of this certain mechanic who I don't really like it might be true, but there were 2 other mechanics there as well. Not to mention the service manager, so a total of 4 people looking at my car. They can't be wrong can they?
I'm at a loss...I think I'll keep on resetting the ecu everytime I get the CE light. |

I have been having some problems with my car too. My CE light has been on for 3 weeks and it hasnt gone away for evena second. I get shaking and spuddering at idle. I think one of my cylinders is misfiring. Should i just get new plugs and wires? Hmmm all this seems to be happening after the o2 sensor recall. A week after i got mine replaced i got a CE light. My mods are CAI, AFC, N1 exhaust. Please someone help! |

AC Gohan...your problem might be caused by your AFC. Check all your wiring and if everything is ok, then it has to be your AFC. That's were the misfiring might be coming from.

I seem to be having the same issue. My CE light came on and I got it hooked up to the computer. It told me that one of my pistons is misfiring. Then 2 weeks later the car died. Jumped it and drove 100 to mechanic. Found out that my alternator died. I guess the fuel injectors weren't getting the juice they needed? I may be wrong since I just got the car back today and after driving for 20 miles the CE light came on again. Will have to get it hooked up again. Hopefully I'll find out what's going on. I'm gonna try to find some BG 44k fuel injection cleaner in the meantime. I heard this stuff is amazing.

For anyone interested, I haven't been getting the CE light in a long while.
I think it was probably the ecu getting used to the old cats in the car. |

No more light
I put in BG 44k I got from NAPA auto parts for $20 and after a 300 miles my CE light went out. It hasn't come back in 2 weeks now.

I have the same problem. Ive got MY'00, Rallispec intake, Borla Gen3, Apex N1 catback. I'm on my 4th o2 sensor now. It costs me $75.00 to get a replacement and I get CE about a week after replacing it. Dealer says that it is due to my Borla, but I think it is something else. I have ordered Magnacore wires, Denso iridium plugs, and im going to get RC matched injectors to see if that takes care of the problem... Sometimes after the o2 has been for a while (2 1/2 months) my car will just die while idling. Thats how I know its time to replace again not to mention getting 16-17mpg driving around in the city...

Talked to dealer
I was talking to a mechanic at a dealership around here and just casually mentioned that I'm having a problem with CE light and that my car sputters (by listening to exhaust). Told them I replaced the spark plugs again and seemed to do this less frequently. They told me they've been having problems with the ignition wires going bad, usually only one of them.
