Post Hit the rev limiter today...

Hello all, today I was messing arround with my friend's RX-7, and in 3rd I hit the rev limiter. It kicked in at like 6400-6500RPM. Now, this wasn't on purpose, I usually watch the tach, and make sure I shift at like 6000RPM but today I just wasnt paying attention and... My question, did I hurt anything? The motor sounds fine, but I feel bad... Could what I did cause damage in the future? Anything I could check? Any input will GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Danny

you should be fine
a short burst of over reving wont damage anything.

Just dont do it for more than 10 seconds then something could blow then it wouldnt be a good day for you

Rev limiter is there for that reason : stop the engine from overrevving before it's too late. I do it all the time when autox-ing. Everything is fine. Just don't keep it at that speed for a long time.

Sounds of a scooby on a medium speed auto-x
dah-dah-dah-dah-dah....
your engine is good to 7k dont worry about the rev limiter, its an idiot switch. I hit it several times a week.... just dont hold it there unless racing.

but if I understand correctly, the rev limiter only works if you're accelerating. If you were going all out in 3rd, and then downshifted to 2nd, the rev limiter won't do anything for you when the tach goes over right? or will the rev limiter cut you back?

Guys and gals,
Guess what day is it everyday?
It's Hit-the-limiter-day

hehehe...
J/k...I don't usually hit it.
Unless street-beating Si-s.

when you downshift from 3rd to 2nd (or anyother gears from higher to lower), the rev limitter will not kick in. Actually, it will kick in, but it will be too late. Let's say the engine is running at 5500RPM at 3rd gear, and you downshift to 2nd gear. Most likely the RPM will be in the 7000 RPM area.

Rev limiters were made for smacking into. At least once in a while. I can tell just when mine is about to kick now. Probably the worst strain they cause is the shuddering in the driveline as the engines dies and fires etc. I can tell you it's a shock when you run into on a GSXR, I thought I broke the thing it cut the engine off. The gixxer excelerates so hard when the enine died it felt like it was going to throw you over the bars.

6500 isn't dookie for an rx-7. my '85 12a bridgeport(stock internals except for larger volume oil pump, high pressure oil relief valve, and of course, the ports) hits 8000rpm
on a daily street driven basis. 8000-8500 is the limit for 2piece apex seals(what all of them use from the factory).

I remember the needle burying itself past the limit on the tach of my '88 RX-7 (9800+RPM) it wasn't a pretty sight, but for some inexplicable reason the old girl was still fine...

No, what I meant was that I was racing with my friend who has a RX-7. I know those cars can go to 8000RPM. I have a 01RS.

funny you should mention that... I had to test the rev limiter the other day. Hpirally and I were out for a ride, and it occured to me, that I have never red lined my car. I generally only pull it to 5.5 or so, maybe 5.9 if I'm pushing. So... wack... about 6.45 is my estimate... fun stuff
