Post oil pressure gauge

this might be a dumb question, but would an oil pressure gauge let you know if you were loosing oil or just if oil is being pumped through your engine? i gues what i mean is if oil pressure dropped could that be an idication that you were loosing oil? thanks in advance.

I really don't think an oil pressure guage would let you know you are loosing oil until you are pretty much screwed. As long as there is a minute amount of oil that can be pumped, it will show up as pressure on the guage. This could, or could not, be enough oil to keep you from seizing things up. I still want one though, I think oil pressure guages are one of those nice things to see. On my older car (66 Pontiac) it helps me see when it is warmed up enough to drive.

Well, actually if you do pay attention to the gauge you will notice that you are loosing oil. It will not go as high as it used to uder same conditions.

25psi is right. If you lose oil, there will be less pressure. Also if you have oil temp gauge, oil temp will go up as you lose oil. Less oil = more heat.

The idiot light comes on when you lose way too much oil also. But, by the time the idiot light comes on, your engine is almost gone forever.

An oil pressure gauge will not display any signs of an oil leak, unless the level drops below that of the oil pickup.

At which point, you are probably about to ruin your engine.

Check the oil on a weekly basis...along with water and other fluids.

The stock oil warning light sucks.. the sensor is set to something like 2.5 psi.. and if that comes on... get the check book out for a new engine...

well thanks a lot guys. the reason i posted this queston was more along the lines of helping me decide what gauges to get not about if my car is leaking oil, i know it is slightly i can smell it burning, and i check it like every two or three days and know that the level is going down slightly more everytime till i put more oil in it, unfortuantely i dont have the time or the space in my garage to fix the problem correctly, but now that i got my charger almost done i should be able to work on it this weekend. well thanks again.
