Need help with old GL tranny...

Okay all you Subaru gurus out there. I know someone with an old '84 or so GL with some tranny woes. I don't know the nature of the problems other than it's not working. The car is in excellent condition, 37,000 originial miles, no rust, engine and other components work fine.

The tranny was described as having several belts inside, the torque converter is filled with magnetic dust, and there are brushes like in an electric motor around it. The problem is that the guy is apparently trying to fix it himself. He's pretty handy, but this tranny is a totally new experience.

Anyone know of any manuals, books, online info., or a resource that could help here? Any useful information would be appreciated. Thanks.
