Default Coil Question

Does anybody know if the stock coil output is infinately variable, or stepped? I'm trying to figure out a misfire problem...

Thanks,

Jay

Not for sure, but I could see the stock ecu varying the output based on dwell time. I dont know if it does though.

Sorry I cant help. Free bump for ya though.

Thanks anyway, Chav.. I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting a misfire at low RPM's under medium-to-heavy accelleration, but not at high RPM...

If the coil is stepped, therefore pushing higher current throughout a set RPM range, then I most likely have a coil problem. If not, then I'll look elsewhere for the culprit...

Any suggestions would be helpful...

I'm no expert but I was under the impression that the current should be relatively constant (linear). If you're getting a midrange hesitation/misfire it could be several things other than a coil problem. What is your AFR, are you running pig rich (which n/a EJs are notorious for). Are you running too lean, detonating and having timing retarted by the ECU? What is the gap on your plugs? What is the condition of your plugs? Is there any sign of arcing either from the coil or from a wire(s)? Do you have any deposits on the coil terminals? BTW, the coils from 99+ (non-EJ20) are known to go out for no apparent reason... one of the many subaru quirks.
