Default I'm actually an engineer, but... I crippled my fuse box. Help.

Okay, so first I'm not an idiot, but right about now I feel like one. I was testing circuits in the fuse box to see what was on the "accessory" switch and what was on the "on" switch. Where I went wrong is I was pressing the positive needle from my multi-meter in the fuse holders, and of course grounding the other. Problem is the needles are thicker than the fuse contacts and I bent the contacts inside the fuse box. Now my fog light fuse will not stick and a couple others may be damaged. I didn't test any vital circuits thankfully. Anyway, can I pull the cover off of the fuse box and get at all the contacts so that I can bend them back into shape? I REALLY don't want to have to replace the entire fuse box. Any advise as to taking off the cover would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Which fuse box, the one under the dash, or the one in the engine compartment?

Either way you should be able to get at the contacts and rebend them. It might even be possible from the "front" by using some dental type tools. But as you need to bend them so they grip fairly tightly, it will probably neccessitate getting to the back.

Oh, and I hope I don't have to mention the obvious, but I will - DISCONNECT the battery!!

I can see clearly now...

If bending the contacts back doesn't work:

wrap each of the blades of the fuse with something (cut up soda can w/ coating sanded off or heavy duty aluminum foil) that increases the width of the blades enough to get a tight fit in the fuse holder. The soda can is probably the better approach because it will be easier to get it out if (when) you need to change the fuse. Just be sure that the shim material is long enough to extend out the fuse slot (so you have something to grab if it stays behind when removing the fuse).

You can just solder new fuse holder into the fuse box. 5 minute job.

Yeah Iwas thinking of just adding some solder to the terminals on the fuse to add thickness. Should be easy enough.

Default Fixed!

Well, it's not back to original condition, but it's working safely. I just bent the end of the fuse so there is a kink in them. Sort of a spring. Anyway, the contact is good, and my fog lights are running safely!

Thanks for all the advise. I new I could count on i-club!

most fuses have a contact on the top of them too, so you could just leave them in (next time ) and still test.

Not sure if the ones in our cars do but, i would think so.
