Default Legacy Map Lights

Anyone have a map light set on a WRX or RS that wasnt made for their car? I can get a set of Legacy map-lights for 20@, but I dont know if it comes with a connector. how hard do you think it would be to install? Im pretty good with electronics, so Im sure i could make up some kind of connector, but will I have to cut into my headrest?

You shouldn't have to touch the headrest -- only the headliner on the roof. The main thing is to run power and ground wires up to the area where you are going to mount the lights.

The Legacy map light kit comes with wiring to connect to the dome light. There is also a cutting template, although on Impreza it has to be positioned with some careful measurements.

DOH! headrest...i meant the headliner...stupid heads!

Well if it hooks in to the dome light thats great! I dont MIND cutting into the headliner a little...does it just hold onto the headliner, or will it somehow mount more solidly onto the roof of the car.

Thanks!

Behind the headliner there is a bracket with threaded holes for the light. You will need to make a small cutout to locate the holes, then center the template and cut the opening.

Bumping an ancient thread. But I had to add some info about this.

For years I'd been grinding my teeth about getting the $36 map light kit for my 96 Legacy. Then I found about about this link mentioning $6 map lights at www.1stsubaruparts.com .

I placed my order Friday and received the parts the following Wednesday. It was easy locating the cutout area. My kit was wired incorrectly - there are two slots in the connector but only one wire. The pin was swapped and did not match up with the connector on the light. Easy fix, but threw me off when testing.

I'm so amazed at how bright the front seats are. I wish I had them for the first 9 years of owning this car. But it brings a smile to my face knowing I paid $6 instead of $36 so I can really enjoy the next 9 or more years of this car.

Thanks to AFBeefcake for the tip off on this nice upgrade.

Thanks, I thought it was a good idea.

Did the screw holes in the roof line up with the holes in the map light?
I don't think mine did.

The holes lined up perfectly. I'm impressed that the holes in the ceiling were even pre-threaded.

So did you have to pull down the headliner to run the power line from the dome light? Or would I be able to just pull the dome light then just try feeding wire down to the hole I just cut??

Also, does anyone know if you can also use the maplight kit from the newer Legacy Outbacks (ones with a sunglass holder case)....00 and up? Or are there fitment issues?

If your car allread has the screew holes in the roof for the maplight then you should not have to remove the head liner. Just fish the wire from the dome light hole to the new maplight hole.

Hi, I just bought a map light for the MY '95-'99 legacy for my MY04 Impreza. It came with everything(screws, tape, wires, directions). So I followed the directions since it stated to tap into the blue/red wire in my dome light but when doing this, it didnt light up so I tried tapping into the solid blue wire thinking thats the wire which its use for power but no luck!!! Any suggestions on how to proceed now??? All info will be appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Well I would start by using a multi meter to find power and ground.

The Legacy light is grounded through the attachments screws so make sure there's good contact there. The "new age" light is the same, except maybe for the color, but has a two-wire connection.

What do you mean, "two wire connection"? Minds came only with a female plug that connects to a male plug thats located on the blue/red wire... Can you please clarify... I checked the female connector of the map light and it only shows one side with wire going through and the other is just a empty void. I cant load a picture of it for some reason...
